Regarding, the appearance of Buddhas in the world is a hundred paths, and the human body is obtained with difficulty. Alas, faith and listening to the Dharma, such things are difficult to obtain even in hundreds of kalpas. And in the "Great Play Sutra" it says, it is difficult to obtain the appearance of humans and Buddhas, faith is also extremely difficult to obtain, it is difficult to be free from the eight non-freedoms, and listening to the Dharma is the most important. The appearance of Buddhas and leisure, faith and listening to the sacred Dharma, all those are obtained now, completely eliminate all non-vigilance. If for hundreds of thousands of kotis of kalpas, existence does not change by listening to the Dharma, you have already obtained it today, completely eliminate all non-vigilance. And in the "Commentary on Reasoning" it says, speech and the ear itself, desire and wisdom without obstacles, why are these five difficult to obtain, therefore one should listen to the words of the Able One. And, if sentient beings die from here, will they still encounter the precious Dharma and the Three Jewels? They will not hear it again, who will explain the sacred Dharma? No one knows that, therefore you should strive to listen to the words of the Teacher. And, if there is existence, one obtains life without being eaten by demons, but that will mostly be spent meaninglessly. Well-spoken words also only appear a few times on earth, appearing like the Udumbara flower. Thus. Second, possessing the six perfections, giving the three doors of body, speech, and mind for the sake of the Dharma, restraining from misdeeds and abandoning the faults of the vessel, enduring harm and delighting in listening, focusing the mind on sound and meaning, obtaining superior realization, or in the middle, following the sound and holding and protecting, contemplating the meaning. The lowest is immeasurable. Third, afterwards, asking for forgiveness of faults, dedicating the merit and making a gesture of gratitude. Fourth, both exhort to accomplish the meaning of the Dharma. Fourth, in order for such hearing and thinking to become the path, having discipline, abiding, hearing, and thinking, one should be very much in accordance with meditation. Thus, pure discipline is a necessary basis, in the "Samadhi King Sutra" it says, no matter how much purity of the Dharma, if one is complacent from hearing and does not protect discipline, one whose discipline is corrupted will fall into the lower realms, and no amount of hearing can save them from that. Thus it is said. Having much learning and abiding in discipline also

It must be combined with contemplation and meditation. In the sutra called "The Monk Abiding in the Dharma Sutra," it says: Without relying on meditation, one cannot abide in the Dharma merely through the combination of listening and thinking; without relying on listening and thinking, one cannot abide in the Dharma merely through the combination of meditation; only by relying on both, abiding in both, can one abide in the Dharma. This is what the sutra says. The Ornament of the Sutras also says: Thus, whatever meditation of a yogi is, it is not meaningless. Whatever teaching of the Sugata is, it is not meaningless. If one could see the meaning merely through listening, then meditation would become meaningless. If one could enter meditation without listening, then the teaching would become meaningless. This is what it says in the sutra. Therefore, first, in order to counteract the source or cause of many sufferings—unrestrained discipline—one must guard discipline, and then strive to purify afflictions. The order of this is as Shantideva said: One should seek patience-inducing listening, then one should dwell in the forest, one should strive in samadhi, and one should meditate on the unattractive, etc. This is what it says. Among these, patience is needed first, because without patience, one would not even think of weariness, so listening cannot enter. If there is no listening, one will not know the method of meditation for abandoning afflictions, so one should seek listening. Even if one understands the Dharma through listening, if one acts like a blind person, samadhi will not arise. Even if one speaks words in accordance with the Dharma, anger and hatred, distrust, and loud talk—these are the Dharma of children. If one fully understands that meaning, one will not doubt. As it says in the Moon Lamp Sutra, one should abandon gain, respect, desire, craving, and association with children. In the forest, wild animals, birds, and trees do not make unpleasant sounds. If one associates with those pleasant things, when will one dwell together? Here, the solitude of the forest is shown. Then, if one does not strive to abandon distraction, one will not enter samadhi, so one must strive in samadhi, and its result is purifying afflictions, so one should meditate on the unattractive, etc. Even if one listens a lot, if one is separated from practice, that is a great fault. In the Fierce One's Question Sutra, it says: If one has listening, and obtains this leisure and fortune, but the mind is attached to gain, etc.
