Third General Topic: How to practice listening to and explaining the Dharma, and how to put it into practice. Third General Topic: How to practice listening to and explaining the Dharma, and how to put it into practice. First, the distinction of the Dharma to be explained. The third topic has four aspects: the distinction of the Dharma to be explained, the distinction of the teacher's way of explaining, the distinction of the student's way of listening, and the advice that both should strive to accomplish the meaning of the Dharma. First, in general, in order to become proficient in knowledge, one must study various treatises. In the Vinaya, it is also said that one should study even the treatises of outsiders. Bodhisattvas, in particular, are taught to study everything. However, the main thing that leads to the path is to listen to and explain the teachings of the Buddha. The identification of the teachings is: From the Sutra of Light, it says, "The three trainings are well shown, the three seals are also complete, the beginning, middle, and end are virtuous, the wise know it as the Buddha's word." This means that what is to be practiced are the three trainings, and the view is the three seals of the Dharma, which are confirmed by scripture: all phenomena are without self, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, and all contaminated actions are suffering. These three are shown, and in essence, it speaks of being virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end. In the Pratimoksha Sutra, it says, "Do no evil, cultivate virtue, purify your mind, this is the teaching of the Buddhas." Thus it is said. In the Sutra, it says, "The sacred Dharma is virtuous in the beginning, virtuous in the middle, virtuous in the end, the meaning is good, the words are good, unmixed, complete, pure, and purified." Being virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end is explained by Asanga and others as listening, contemplating, and meditating. Some explain that the beginning of the sutra is the introduction, the middle is the main body, and the end is the dedication of merit and rejoicing. The teacher Gunamati explains that the beginning of the treatise is the homage, the middle is the body of the treatise, and the end is the summary. If explained according to the reasoning of the Pramanavarttika, then the beginning, middle, and end are the aggregates of discipline, concentration, and wisdom, which are virtuous because they are not completely lacking. Good meaning means that what is to be expressed is complete because it is not inverted. Good words mean that the way of expression is complete because it makes it understandable. Unmixed means that it is not mixed with others.

Therefore. Perfection is because it is the antidote to all afflictions. Complete purity is liberation from the afflictions of one's own ground, it is self-nature liberation. Complete purification is because it abandons the latent tendencies of afflictions of other grounds, it is continuum liberation. Being endowed with these, it should be understood as the holy Dharma. In short, the Buddha's teaching, the holy Dharma, enters the sutra pitaka of the noble truths. It appears in taming afflictions. It is the custom of the common vehicle that it does not contradict the nature of dependent origination. The custom of the Great Vehicle, as previously explained in the Uttaratantra, or as in the Ornament of Sutras: With faith, joy, and wisdom, this Dharma is the cause of virtue. Meanings are twofold, easy to grasp, and possess four qualities, proclaiming pure conduct. Possessing what is uncommon to others, completely abandoning the afflictions of the three realms, being self-nature pure, and free from defilements, it is considered to be pure conduct possessing four qualities. Thus it is. The uncommon custom of the Great Vehicle is: As it is said, emptiness and compassion are inseparable, the mind thoroughly meditates on whatever, that itself is also the teaching of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Therefore, the essence of emptiness and compassion is said to be the Buddha's teaching. Such a teaching, whether it is the Buddha's word or a special treatise, also exists as two, word and meaning. In the Ornament of Sutras it is said: Just as carrying it is very comfortable, and tasting it is like delicious medicine, the Dharma also exists as two, it should be known as meaning and letters. Thus it is said. The perfection of meaning is possessing the four qualities of pure conduct, etc. The perfection of letters is in the Ornament of Sutras: Because of teaching and thus proclaiming, being in accordance with the vehicle and happiness, fame and whatever is appropriate, definite departure and being in accordance. Therefore, in short, it is said to be the perfection of letters of the supreme Bodhisattvas. In the Compendium of Explanations it is also said: The nature of the Sutra Pitaka is twofold, words and meaning. Among these, words are the place, and meaning is what abides therein, it should be known. What is encompassed by the two, is what should be known. Thus it is said. In the Small Treatise on Dharma Excellence it is also said: The nature of explanation is
