If one does not practice, it will become solely deceiving the gods and the world, as it is said in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*: O Sharakshita, for example, someone is carried away by a great ocean of water, yet dies of thirst. O Sharakshita, some shramanas and brahmins learn many dharmas and become fully aware of them all, but they do not eliminate the craving for desire, they do not eliminate the craving for hatred, they do not eliminate the craving for ignorance. Those people are carried away by the ocean of dharma, yet die of the thirst of afflictions, and will go to bad destinies. Therefore, there is no essence in someone like me who only talks but does not practice. It is important to value meaning and practice. In the *Adhyashayasamchodhana Sutra*: Having heard, one becomes arrogant and disrespectful, Attached to various words of debate, One becomes verbose and loses mindfulness, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. The inner mind becomes very distant, Body and mind also become not fully tamed, One becomes proud and generates many knots, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. Children's contemplation on the sacred Dharma diminishes, The mind becomes inflexible and very coarse, Very distant from shamatha and vipashyana, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. Always without respect for the gurus, Yet generating joy in defiled speech, Abiding in the meaningless and wisdom declines, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. They are not honored by the assembly of gods, At that time, desire will not arise for them either, Having fallen away from their own correct wisdom, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. Those whose bodies obviously have many faults, Will be reproached by the wise, Their life becomes meaningless, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. I have declined in practice, what should I do now? At the time of death, children grieve, Because they have not found the profound meaning, they become very distressed, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. Moving and swaying like grass being blown by the wind, That person will surely become so doubtful, That person will never become steadfast, These are the faults of being fond of speaking. Like sitting among a crowd fond of dancing, Speaking of the qualities of other heroes.

One's own diligence will decline; these are the faults of delighting in speech! That person is cunning and also frivolous, repeatedly devising various schemes, far away from the noble and sacred Dharma; these are the faults of delighting in speech! Weak in power, he rejoices in boasting; an ignorant person is deceitful and changeable; like a monkey, his mind wavers; these are the faults of delighting in speech! Because his own intelligence is low, that foolish person relies on others; that person is under the control of the afflictive side; these are the faults of delighting in speech! The eyes are also confused, and likewise the ears are also confused; the nose is also confused, and likewise the tongue is also confused; the body is also confused, and the mind also becomes confused; these are the faults of delighting in speech! His mind is very attached to the consciousness of hearing, filled with sound, his wisdom declines; he thinks wrongly and goes to the evil path; these are the faults of delighting in speech! Having spoken thus and so forth, because of delighting in speech for a long time, that person will not obtain joy; words that can obtain boundless joy, even thinking of just one word is supreme! The sugarcane peel has no essence; the taste that should be enjoyed is inside; by eating the peel, a person cannot find the delicious taste of sugarcane. Just as the peel is like speech, the taste is like thinking about the meaning of this; therefore, abandon delighting in speech, always be mindful and contemplate the meaning! Thus it was said. This principle was written by Buton Kache, who had much learning but was separated from practice and had not accumulated merit. May he quickly, through this virtue, die and be reborn in Tushita, and experience the feast of joy of the fearless Dharma! From the source of Dharma, the treasury of precious scriptures, the chapter on definitely showing how to engage in teaching and listening is complete, the first chapter is complete.
