These are the two mothers, namely sound and meaning. Thus it is. Therefore, the Dharma to be explained is spoken by the Buddha, collected by the collectors, explained by the wise and accomplished ones, translated by the translator saints, and the tantras with the oral instructions and scriptures of the lineage of lamas, or the Sutra Pitaka, or the treatises, whichever of the Sutra Pitaka, Abhidhamma Pitaka, or Vinaya Pitaka, will be explained as this and this. Second, the difference in the way the Acharya teaches. In the second aspect, there are three: who teaches, which is the characteristic of the Acharya; the means of explaining based on what; and how to explain. In the first aspect, many different characteristics of the Acharya are mentioned in each text. The "Three Hundred Verses" says: Those who possess morality and know the rituals of discipline, are compassionate to the sick, whose retinue has faith, who are diligent in benefiting Dharma and wealth, and who admonish at the right time are praised as lamas. Acharya Nagarjuna says: Know the concise characteristics of these virtuous friends: contentment, compassion, morality, and wisdom to dispel afflictions. If you rely on them, you should know to respect them. Thus it says. Shantideva says: The constant virtuous friend is skilled in the meaning of the Great Vehicle. Thus it says. Chandra Gomi says: The lama who abides in vows and is skilled, and who is capable, should be relied upon. Thus it says. The Ornament of the Sutras says: The virtuous friend is subdued, peaceful, very peaceful, superior in qualities, diligent, rich in scriptures, fully realized in thatness, skilled in speech, possessed of love, and relies on abandoning weariness. That is, subdued by possessing morality, peaceful by possessing samadhi, very peaceful by possessing wisdom and afflictions, superior by being superior to others in qualities, possessing diligence by not being lazy in benefiting others, rich in scriptures by being learned, fully realizing the suchness of what is to be known, skilled in speech, possessing love by not looking at wealth, and not weary of teaching the Dharma. That is, possessing ten qualities. The Bodhisattva is learned, sees the truth, is skilled in speech, has love, and the noble person without weariness should be known to be great. That is, the quality of the scriptures is being learned, the quality of realization is seeing the truth, being skilled in speech, and the intention not

Loving without regard to appearances, without balance in thought and action, and without weariness, does it possess these five qualities? Vast and dispelling doubts, worthy of being received and demonstrating the two truths, this is said to be the excellent teacher of a Bodhisattva. Thus, being extensively learned through much hearing, dispelling the doubts of those to be tamed through great wisdom, being worthy of being taken as a lama through virtuous actions of the three doors, and demonstrating the two truths of affliction and purification, it is said to possess four qualities. These are mostly the qualities of noble beings, so while it is pleasing to possess them, the necessary conditions as indispensable limbs are three: the wisdom of the learned, the thought of love, and the three actions endowed with patience. The first has three aspects: being skilled in what is to be explained, being skilled in explaining, and being skilled in conduct. The first is that it is good to be skilled in all that is to be known or in all the collections of teachings, but here, one needs to be skilled in the meaning of the words of what is being explained, endowed with scriptural authority, reasoning, and pith instructions, because this enables one to cut off the doubts of those to be tamed. Secondly, there are three aspects of speech that are connected: the expression is clear, it is relevant no matter from where it is spoken, it is appropriate no matter how much is spoken, and it is reasonable no matter how it is spoken. And there are three aspects of pleasing sound that can delight others. Or, as it says in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "Speech and words are extremely reasonable, teaching and distinguishing, cutting off doubts, endowed with not refuting, for the beginning, statement, detailed explanation, and meanings, the teachings of the Buddhas, are purified by the three wheels, this should be known as being free from the eight faults. Laziness and not understanding, not distinguishing the occasion and uncertainty, doubts are not cut off, and not teaching what is separate from that, weariness and stinginess itself, these are considered faults of speech. Because these are absent, the Buddha's speech becomes supreme." Thus, because it is free from the eight faults of speech, it is a speech purified by the three wheels, or in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, in order to counteract the eleven faults of expression, it is taught to possess twenty aspects of Dharma talk. Because one sits with unpleasant conduct, speaking to an unsuitable vessel, as a remedy for the fault of speech, knowing that one is a willing listener and is capable of speaking, thereby speaking at the appropriate time. Because my own teaching and listening do not possess these, they are meaningless and I do not see them as leading to the path.
