Because the sound is very pleasant, it is the dragon sound of the Gandharvas. Because of sharpness and destruction, it is the sound of the Kalaviṅka. Because it resounds far away, it is the proclaimed sound of Brahma. Because it is auspicious to precede all accomplishments, it is the sound of the Shangshang bird. The mention of "sound" is to understand the meaning of this and that. The mention of "tone" is to understand that it is the sound of the characteristic that shows meaning. The mention of "resonance" is to subsequently proclaim the meaning of that and that sound. Because it is not something to be surpassed, it is as pleasant as the voice of the lord of the gods. Because it precedes the complete victory over all demons and adversaries, it is the sound of the drum. Because of praise, there is no affliction, so it is not arrogant. Because of disparagement, there is no dejection, so it is neither high nor low. Because it follows all sound treatises with the characteristics of all aspects, it follows all sounds. Because it is spoken without forgetting, there is no omission. Because the actions of those to be tamed abide closely at all times, there is no incompleteness. Because it does not rely on gain and respect, it is not discouraged. Because it is free from timidity, it is not weak. Because there is no weariness, it is very joyful. Because it is skilled in all fields of knowledge, it is pervasive. Because it completely accomplishes all the purposes of sentient beings, it is without end. Because there is no interruption, it is continuous. Because it abides in various ways, it is majestic. Because multiple forms of sound abide in one voice, it perfects all sounds. Because the forms of multiple meanings are easily understood from one voice, it satisfies all senses. Because it acts as promised, it is not blamed. Because it is perfectly integrated at the time of attainment, it is unchanging. Because it does not speak hastily, it is not rushed. Because the retinue hears the sound equally from far and near, it is renowned throughout the retinue. Because it transforms all worldly matters into exemplary teachings, it is endowed with the supreme of all aspects. Thus spoke the noble Asaṅga, as explained in the Twenty Thousand Verses.

Absence of defilement is called enlightenment, and speaking is called abundance. The explanation of the sixty branches is that the Sarvastivadins, the *Ratnagotravibhāga*, the commentary on the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha*, and the systems of reasoning in the *Vyakhyayukti* all seem to agree. In the *Inconceivable Secret Sutra*, the vocal melody has sixty-four branches, which are widely known in the retinue, pacifying desire, subduing hatred, eliminating ignorance, and vanquishing the armies of demons, and so on. Maitreya says: "The sixty branches are inconceivable." It is said in the sutra. The noble Asanga, Vimuktisena, Vasubandhu, and others who have become authorities on the scriptures say that the sixty branches are explained in that very sutra, so it is reasonable to examine whether or not additional words have been inserted. Third, there are six divisions: divided according to time, object, expression, antidote, those to be tamed, and the self-cause. First, with regard to time: the first discourse was the Wheel of Dharma of the Four Noble Truths, the intermediate discourse was the Wheel of Dharma of No Characteristics, and the final discourse was the Wheel of Dharma of Definitive Meaning, as explained in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*. Second, as it says: "The Buddhas teach the Dharma, truly relying on the two truths." Therefore, that which shows what does not abide by conventional reasoning is provisional meaning, and that which shows what is appropriate by ultimate reasoning is definitive meaning. As taught by the noble Inexhaustible Intelligence: "Showing the establishment of convention is provisional meaning. Showing the establishment of ultimate truth is definitive meaning." Those who think that all sutras are provisional meaning in relation to the Buddha and definitive meaning in relation to those to be tamed are completely mistaken. Third, there are twelve branches of scripture, as stated in the *Essence of the Eight Thousand Verse Commentary*: "Sutras, songs, and prophecies, verses, self-utterances, and stories, birth stories, marvels, and determinations, are the twelve branches of scripture." Among these, the Sutra section is: that which is spoken alone in the manner of stating the desired meaning. Why is it not spoken separately? In the *Compendium of Topics*: "Having seen ten benefits, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma in the manner of stating, thereby establishing [it]."
