Therefore, in 'What Dharma is conditioned or unconditioned?' Dharma refers to knowable; in 'Right view is Dharma,' it refers to the path; in 'Taking refuge in the Dharma,' it refers to nirvana; in 'Dharma-object,' it refers to the realm of mind; in 'Practicing Dharma together with the queen's entourage and youths,' it refers to merit; in 'Children cherish the Dharma they see,' it refers to life; in 'Dharma, such as the Sutra Pitaka,' it refers to scripture; in 'This body is the Dharma of aging,' it refers to change; in 'The four Dharmas of a monk,' it refers to certainty; in 'Local Dharma, caste Dharma,' it refers to law. These are ten meanings. These are considered mainly in terms of what is important, but they are not limited to these. Among these, the knowable is Dharma because it holds characteristics, from the characteristic of form being susceptible to change, to the characteristic of omniscience being the direct perception of all Dharmas, each holding its own characteristics, and holding the common characteristics that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all contaminated phenomena are suffering, all Dharmas are without self, and all nirvanas are peaceful. The realm of mind is Dharma because it holds its own characteristics or is held by the mind. Life is Dharma because it holds the body or holds the continuity of similar types. Scripture, as it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: Dharma is the Sutras, etc., meaning that it shows valid reasoning and that the meaning is not inverted." } ] ============================================================

Because it has the meaning of holding and determining. Thus it is said. Because it performs the action of holding onto the future and doing what must be done, it is holding. Because it holds the behavior of places and types, it is places, dharma, and so on. The three, namely the path, nirvana, and merit, are dharma because they hold back from falling. Among these, there are two: holding back from falling into the lower realms and holding back from falling into samsara. The first is, from the Udanavarga: "One who practices dharma sleeps happily in this world and the next." Like this, based on faith in cause and effect, or based on the worldly right view, practicing the ten virtues, or meditating on the formless samadhi of worldly meditation, and so on. These are called dharma because they hold back from falling into the lower realms, and some non-Buddhists also have it. Holding back from falling into samsara is the refuge of the inner path, called the supreme dharma of those who are free from desire, which is nirvana, and the path truth that obtains it, along with its retinue. The Mahayana path, nirvana, and scriptures hold back from falling into the Hinayana, because the wisdom that realizes selflessness and love, great compassion, etc., are combined, so they hold back from falling into existence and peace. In particular, the meaning of the term "noble dharma" is that "noble" is the complete Buddha, and because it is the dharma taught by him, it is called noble dharma. Or, "noble" is supreme, and it is also dharma, so noble dharma is of the same essence. Or, because it is to be practiced by noble beings, it is noble dharma, like the four dharmas of a monk. Third, Definition. The third is, what needs to be established here is that the noble dharma is that which has merit, the path, and nirvana as its main object of expression, and the scriptures as its means of expression. Its definition is that when one focuses on it, it becomes a means of exhausting the obscurations of sentient beings, as it is said: "All sufferings and, the noble dharma that eliminates all obscurations." Thus it is said. Among these, there are two types: the dharma of realization and the dharma of scripture, as it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: "The Buddha's noble dharma is of two kinds, namely the nature of scripture and realization." Therefore, the definition of the dharma of realization is: what is free from desire by what, what is free from attachment by what, what is free from desire.
