Eighth, residing at the foot of a great mountain, he requested teachings, and (the guru) said, "Throw the king's consort from the throne." After doing so, all the ministers threw him off a cliff, and he experienced the suffering of his flesh and bones being crushed. Later, the guru blessed him, and he was restored to his former state. He was given the teachings on transference of consciousness (phowa), and he understood that this was a sign that he needed to connect with the realm of the Buddha. Ninth, while residing in a secluded place, the guru himself said, "If you want teachings, throw the prince from the throne." The prince went on a picnic with the ministers, and on the way, he was thrown from the throne, and the ministers and others were beaten until they were half-dead. Later, the guru blessed him, and he was restored to his original body. He was given the teachings on entering a city, and he understood that this was a sign of transference of consciousness and entering a womb. Tenth, demonstrating the great bliss of the lower gate, he resided once again in a delightful garden, offered a mandala, and requested teachings. (The guru) said, "If that is the case, do not rely on a mudra." Then, with a gesture, he summoned the Immaculate Woman and bestowed (initiation). Relying on her, although joy and bliss increased, his body became emaciated. The guru inserted a vajra pestle into the vajra passage and pounded it like pounding tsampa, and pus and blood flowed out, causing great suffering. Later, he smeared it with his hand, and it was restored to its former state. He was given the teachings on the lower gate. He understood that this was a sign that, by relying on a mudra, co-emergent wisdom arises. Eleventh, residing near a tree full of flowers, (the guru) said, "If you want teachings, offer your wisdom consort." So he offered her without hesitation. Tilopa said, "From the expanse of the dharmadhatu, joyful Naropa, the secret place of the dakinis, the wish-fulfilling jewel of secret mantra, look into the mirror of unborn mind." Then he gave the instructions on the Great Seal (Mahamudra), and by relying on the consort, he recognized the co-emergent (wisdom) itself through the words of the guru. He understood that this was a sign of familiarizing his own continuum. Twelfth, residing in a desert without water, stones, or trees, he prostrated and prayed, and (the guru) said, "If you want the essential instructions, offer a mandala of your body." So he dug out the major veins of his body, chopped them up, and scattered them on the sand, making a mandala. (The guru) said, "An unadorned mandala is born in an empty pure land." So he cut off his own limbs and offered them as ornaments. Tilopa asked, "Are you happy?" Naropa replied, "This mandala of flesh and blood, offered to the guru, the yogi is happy." Tilopa

This contaminated and meaningless body, it's okay to offer it, Naropa! The secret place of the Dakinis, the wish-fulfilling jewel of secret mantras, in the Bardo, look at the mirror of the mind. After saying this, with a touch of his hand, the wounds healed, and the body became even better than before. He gave the instructions for the Bardo. In this way, having followed him for twelve years, each year he received one great hardship and one extraordinary instruction. These instructions were summarized into three points: The reality of things is the path, and the order in which the fruit arises. Having said this, he understood that the above teachings were also a symbol of the three aspects of ground, path, and fruit, and he grasped it in his heart. Then, Tilopa looked this way and that way, picked up an old shoe that was in front of him, and hit Naropa on the forehead. Naropa fainted. When he regained consciousness, his mind did not move from its innate, co-emergent state. Like stars shining on the ocean, all the teachings of the sutras and tantras appeared clearly in his mind. Tilopa explained the meaning of this: "Kyeho! This is self-aware wisdom, beyond the path of speech, not within the realm of the mind. I, Tilopa, have nothing to show. Recognize yourself by yourself." And he said: "Do not think, do not contemplate, do not mind, do not meditate, do not act, the nature of mind itself, rest in its own natural state. Do not make any effort with the mind, in the co-emergent nature of non-duality, the nature of mind is self-aware and self-illuminating, I have nothing to show." Naropa said: "Non-effort is the path of Mahamudra, the mind free from elaboration, inexpressible, and without obscuration, seeing the co-emergent essence, now I will not ask anyone." Having said this, he was convinced in his heart. Realizing the meaning in this way is entirely due to the kindness of this holy guru, and although his kindness is endless, from now on, he thought that even offering just a little bit of material possessions would be acceptable. After that, he set off to visit a wealthy blacksmith friend he had before, bringing two bre of coral and various jewels such as pearls to offer. Tilopa thought, "This person is still attached to things." So he sat on a large coral mound decorated with various jewels.
