One should think like this: put into practice the instructions that suit one's own mind, like one medicine for a hundred diseases, so that the disturbing thoughts gradually decrease day by day. And one must also possess the six perfections. If it is not like that, but one thinks: if I can get some Dharma from this lama, can I get such benefits? Can there be such a good name and reputation? Without regard for vows, without valuing the kindness of the lama, the person who sells the key instructions as merchandise will harm the lama's life and activities. Relying on the Dharma, one will instead fall into the lower realms. As the Incomparable Dagpo said: "If you do not practice the Dharma according to the Dharma, the Dharma will become the cause of falling into the lower realms." Therefore, for a student who regards the lama as a servant, and regards the Dharma as butter, etc., who has four kinds of wrong thoughts, one should not reveal even a trace of the profound key instructions to him. Before the main practice, there are two preliminaries: the preliminary of taming one's own mind and the preliminary of training one's own mind. The first, in other ways of guiding, speaks of the four thoughts that turn the mind, such as the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment. Although there are only three here, while remembering the suffering of samsara, one must also remember the result of karma, that is, how much suffering there is in the places of samsara such as the three lower realms, all of which is caused by non-virtue; the temporary happiness in the heavens and other places is all caused by virtue, one must know and remember this, and thereby generate faith. Therefore, the way of thinking about the suffering of samsara that is first spoken of here must be thought about again and again, and it is necessary to definitely integrate it into one's mind. Because, when the Bhagavan first turned the wheel of Dharma, he said "Kauṇḍinya, this is suffering" and so on, first proclaiming the truth of suffering, this is because if one does not know that samsara is suffering, a pure path of liberation will not arise in one's mind. In the past, lamas gave the instructions step by step, and students also practiced step by step, learning the later content in sequence after mastering the previous one. But nowadays, saying that they are doing guided practice, they don't even think about the four thoughts that turn the mind, but just like collecting the number of five million recitations, they do headless practice, which does not grasp the key points and does not help anything. For example, various kinds of food and drink

It is like having some candies, if you lick them one by one, you will only feel a little bit of sweetness or sourness, but they won't go into your stomach and won't benefit your belly. Similarly, listening to various Dharma teachings, or doing a little bit of superficial study on some teachings, will not benefit your mind at all. Therefore, if you don't have a sense of disgust for the suffering of samsara from the bottom of your heart, and if you don't have a deep sense of aversion to all things in this world, then no matter how much Dharma you practice, you will not be able to transcend the cause of samsara. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past, as well as the wise and accomplished masters of both China and Tibet, although they did not abandon all sentient beings, because of their own heavy karma, they were controlled by afflictions, just like the sun cannot shine into a north-facing cave. Due to the lack of faith, respect, and diligence, they have not been able to enter the right path of Dharma until now. Even now, without giving up this life, thinking that it is meaningful and striving for it, it is like mistaking a hailstone for a precious jewel, holding it tightly without letting go, even if it is put in wine, it will not melt, and in the end, it is just a drop of water. No matter what you are attached to, such as food, clothing, fame, power, wealth, etc., it is meaningless, and it will only increase the suffering at the time of death. You should think about this carefully. All the holy beings of the past recognized that samsara is suffering, abandoned all worldly affairs, and diligently practiced in solitary mountains, and eventually attained accomplishment. No one has been able to practice both Dharma and worldly affairs at the same time, so you should also learn from their behavior and liberation, and you must develop a sense of aversion to samsara. Just as it is said in the instructions, you should practice the suffering of samsara, the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, and the impermanence of life. When thinking about samsara as suffering, you must have unwavering faith in the cause and effect of samsara's happiness and suffering, generate compassion for other sentient beings who are suffering, generate faith in the Three Jewels who can save you from samsara, and practice exchanging self and others, etc. These should be practiced together like a string of beads, this is the key instruction.
