Rain-cloak Rule, question Question: Friend, when more than a month remains of the hot season, for one who seeks a rain-cloak robe, where was the offense of forfeiture and confession laid down? Answer: In Sāvatthī, venerable sirs, it was laid down. Question: Concerning whom, friend, concerning what matter was it laid down? Answer: Concerning the group of six monks, venerable sirs, it was laid down. The group of six monks, venerable sirs, when more than a month remained of the hot season, sought a rain-cloak robe. Concerning that matter, venerable sirs, it was laid down. 3. Bowl Chapter 5. Robe-snatching Rule, question Question: Friend, having oneself given a robe to a monk, by one who is angry, not... Where was the offense of forfeiture and expiation laid down for one who, being displeased, snatches back (a robe)? Answer – It was laid down in Sāvatthī, venerable sir. Question – Concerning whom, friend, and on what occasion was it laid down? Answer – It was laid down concerning the venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir. The venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir, having himself given a robe to a bhikkhu, became angry and displeased, and snatched it back. On that occasion, venerable sir, it was laid down. 3. Question – Where was the offense of forfeiture and expiation laid down for one who, having himself requested thread, causes a robe to be woven by weavers? Answer – It was laid down concerning the group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir. The group of six bhikkhus, venerable sir, having themselves requested thread, caused robes to be woven by weavers. Answer – It was laid down concerning the venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir. The venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir, without having been previously invited, approached the weavers of an unknown householder and made a choice concerning a robe. Question – Friend, that which by the Blessed One, the Seer, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One, knowing a gain belonging to the Sangha, for one who diverts it to oneself, a Nissaggiya Pācittiya (offence of relinquishment and expiation), where was it laid down? Answer – Venerable sir, it was laid down at Sāvatthī. Question – Friend, concerning whom, concerning what matter was it laid down? Answer – Venerable sirs, it was laid down concerning the group of six bhikkhus, Venerable sirs, the group of six bhikkhus, knowing a gain belonging to the Sangha that had been transformed, diverted it to themselves, Venerable sirs, it was laid down concerning that matter. Question – Friend, knowing a gain belonging to the Sangha that has been transformed, one who diverts it to oneself, how many offences does he incur? Answer – Venerable sir, knowing a gain belonging to the Sangha that has been transformed, one who diverts it to oneself, incurs two offences, in the attempt to divert, a Dukkata (minor offence), when diverted, a Nissaggiya Pācittiya (offence of relinquishment and expiation), Venerable sir, knowing a gain belonging to the Sangha that has been transformed, one who diverts it to oneself, incurs these two offences. Question – Friend, whose word is this? Answer – Venerable sir, it is the word of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One. Question – By whom, friend, was it brought? Answer – By tradition, venerable sir, it was brought. Question – Is there, friend, anyone there who has erred? Answer – There is not, venerable sir. Notification for the Recitation May the Sangha, venerable sirs, listen to me. I, venerable sirs, questioned the Venerable Vicittasārābhivaṃsa, holder of the Tipiṭaka, treasurer of the Dhamma, about the many origins and other matters to be asked concerning these sixteen Nissaggiya Pācittiya training rules. And he, being questioned again and again, answered. Thus, venerable sirs, this collection of training rules is pure and very clean, the very word of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. Therefore, just as in the past, the great elder venerable ones, such as Mahākassapa and others, the ancient reciters, recited and re-recited the Dhamma and Vinaya for the long endurance of the Buddha's Dispensation, which is called the holy life, for the welfare of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, for the good, for the happiness of gods and humans, even so, we, now included in the Great Dhamma Assembly of the Sixth Council, should recite these training rules, starting from where they occurred, by performing a collective chanting together. Question on the Training Rule of False Speech Question – The Pācittiya for intentional false speech, friend, which was laid down by the Blessed One, the Knower, the Seer, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, where was it laid down? Concerning whom was it laid down? In what matter was it laid down? Answer – It was laid down, venerable sir, at Sāvatthī. It was laid down concerning Hatthaka the Sakyan. Hatthaka the Sakyan, venerable sir, conversing with sectarians, denied after acknowledging, and acknowledged after denying. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. 1. Question on the Training Rules of Abusive Speech and Slander Question – The Pācittiya for abusive speech, friend, and the Pācittiya for slandering monastics, where were they laid down by the Blessed One? Concerning whom were they laid down? In what matter were they laid down? Answer – They were laid down, venerable sir, at Sāvatthī, concerning the group of six... Concerning which monks it was laid down, the group-of-six monks, venerable sir, quarreling with other monks, insulted them in that matter. The group-of-six monks, venerable sir, carried tales to monks who were quarreling, disputing, and in contention. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. 1. Section on False Speech, 4. Training Rule on Teaching Word by Word Question – For one, friend, who teaches the Dhamma word by word to an unordained person, a pācittiya offense, where was it laid down, concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Sāvatthī, venerable sir, it was laid down, concerning the group-of-six monks, it was laid down. The group-of-six monks, venerable sir, taught the Dhamma word by word to lay followers. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. 1. Section on False Speech, 5. Training Rule on Sleeping Together Question – For one, friend, who sleeps together with an unordained person for more than two or three nights, a pācittiya offense, where was it laid down, concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – In Āḷavī, venerable sir, it was laid down, concerning many monks, it was laid down. Many monks, venerable sir, slept together with an unordained person. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question – For whom, friend, is there no offense even when sleeping together with an unordained person? Answer – For eleven persons, venerable sir, there is no offense when sleeping together with an unordained person: one who stays for two or three nights, one who stays for less than two or three nights, one who, having stayed for two nights, on the third night departs before dawn and stays again, in a completely covered place, in a completely uncovered place, in a completely uncovered place, in a completely covered place, in a mostly covered place, in a mostly uncovered place, when the unordained person is lying down, the monk sits, when the monk is lying down, the unordained person sits, or both are sitting, for one who is insane, for the first offender.
