Question on the Saṅghādisesa rule for a difficult monk Question – Where was the Saṅghādisesa rule enacted by the Blessed One, friend, the Fully Self-Awakened One, for a difficult monk, who does not give up his intention even after being admonished up to the third time? Answer – In Kosambī, sir, it was enacted. Question – Concerning whom, friend, and on what matter, was it enacted? Answer – Concerning Venerable Channa, sir, it was enacted. Venerable Channa, sir, when spoken to by the monks in accordance with the Dhamma, made himself unadmonishable. On that matter, sir, it was enacted. 13. Question on the Saṅghādisesa rule for a family-corrupter Question – Where was the Saṅghādisesa rule enacted by the Blessed One, friend, the Fully Self-Awakened One, for a monk who corrupts families, who does not give up his intention even after being admonished up to the third time? Answer – In Sāvatthī, sir, it was enacted. Question – Concerning whom, friend, and on what matter, was it enacted? Answer – Venerable sirs, it was laid down concerning the monks Assaji and Punabbasu. Venerable sirs, the monks Assaji and Punabbasu, having been subjected to the act of expulsion by the Saṅgha, fell into partiality, ill-will, delusion, and fear. Venerable sirs, it was laid down concerning that matter. Question about the Undetermined Rules Question – Friend, that which was laid down by the Blessed One… (etc.)… the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, the first undetermined rule and the second undetermined rule, where were they laid down? Answer – Venerable sir, they were laid down at Sāvatthī. Question – Friend, concerning whom, concerning what matter were they laid down? Answer – Venerable sir, they were laid down concerning the Venerable Udāyī. Venerable sir, the Venerable Udāyī sat alone with a woman, in a secluded, concealed, and suitable-for-sexual-intercourse seat. And concerning that matter, Venerable sir, the Venerable Udāyī himself sat alone with a woman. And Venerable sir, they were laid down concerning that matter. Question – Friend, whose word is this? Answer – Venerable sir, it is the word of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. Question – Friend, by whom was it brought? Answer – Venerable sir, it was brought down through tradition. Question – Friend, is there any fault here that has been missed? Answer – Venerable sir, there is not. Notification to the Saṅgha for Recitation Venerable sirs, may the Saṅgha listen to me. Venerable sirs, I have questioned the Venerable Vicittasārābhivaṃsa, the holder of the Three Piṭakas, the Treasurer of the Dhamma, on many points that should be questioned, starting from the first rule concerning serious faults. And that Venerable one, when questioned, has answered each time. Thus, Venerable sirs, all these rules are pure and perfectly clear, being the very word of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. Therefore, just as in the past, the great elder monks, led by Mahākassapa, the ancient reciters, recited and re-recited for the long endurance of the holy life, for the welfare of many, for the happiness of many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, for the benefit, for the happiness of gods and humans, even so, we too now, all of us, the sixth Saṅgha A chant belonging to the great Dhamma assembly. Having made a group recitation of these training rules together, let us chant them. Offences Entailing Forfeiture and Confession 1. Chapter on Robes, 1st Training Rule: Question about the First Kathina Question: Friend, that by the Blessed One, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One, an offence entailing forfeiture and confession for one who keeps an extra robe beyond ten days, where was it laid down? Answer: In Vesālī, venerable sir, it was laid down. Question: Friend, concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer: Concerning the group of six monks, venerable sir, it was laid down. The group of six monks, venerable sir, kept an extra robe. In that matter, venerable sir, it was laid down. 1. Question on the training rule of asking an unrelated person Question – Friend, where was it laid down by the Blessed One that there is an offense of relinquishment and expiation for one who asks an unrelated householder or householder's wife for a robe? Sir, Venerable Upananda the Sakyan asked an unrelated son of a wealthy merchant for a robe. Sir, it was laid down in that matter. 1. Robe Chapter 7. Question on the training rule of asking for more than that Question – Friend, where was it laid down by the Blessed One that there is an offense of relinquishment and expiation for one who asks an unrelated householder or householder's wife for more than that in robes? Answer – Sir, it was laid down in Sāvatthī. Question – Friend, concerning whom, in what matter, was it laid down? Answer – Sir, it was laid down concerning the group of six monks. Sir, the group of six monks, not knowing the limit, asked for many robes. Sir, it was laid down in that matter. Question – Previously, not Friend, for one who has been invited, approaching an unknown householder or householder's wife, and making a request for robes, and for one approaching unknown householders, and making a request for robes, where was the offense of relinquishment and expiation enjoined by the Blessed One? Answer – It was enjoined in Sāvatthī, venerable sir. Question – Friend, concerning whom and on what occasion was it enjoined? Answer – It was enjoined concerning the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir. The Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir, before being invited, approached an unknown householder and made a request for robes. That very Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir, before being invited, approached unknown householders and made a request for robes. It was enjoined on that occasion, venerable sir. 1. Question on the King's Training Rule Question – Friend, for one who, after being urged more than three times, or in more than six places, produces a robe, where was the offense of relinquishment and expiation enjoined by the Blessed One? Answer – It was enjoined concerning the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir. The Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, venerable sir, when told by a lay follower, "Venerable sir, please come tomorrow," did not come. It was enjoined on that occasion, venerable sir. 2. Silk Chapter, 1. Question on the Silk Training Rule Question – Friend, for one who has a rug made mixed with silk, where was the offense of relinquishment and expiation enjoined by the Blessed One? Answer – It was enjoined in Āḷavī, venerable sir. Question – Friend, concerning whom and on what occasion was it enjoined? Answer – It was enjoined concerning the group of six monks, venerable sir. The group of six monks, venerable sir, approached the silk weavers and said this: "Friends, you weave many silk items; give some to us too. We also wish to have a rug made mixed with silk."
