Mostly. Once, in a place of a great festival in eastern India, there lived a ragged yogi resembling a heretic with matted hair. After conversing with him, it was found that he could read others' minds, and when asked who he was, he said he was the accomplished Asita Ghana. There, he served him for about a month and heard many teachings. He also heard countless teachings from the accomplished Okoranatha. After that, in places like Rulurati, he served as the abbot of about thirty monasteries in the southern region. He gained stability in the generation stage. It is said that he was proficient in about fifty tantras. From the story like the source of jewels, this is the eighth chapter about the transmission of various teachings. Thus, all these descents of blessings belonged to the great accomplished master, Shiwaba Sangpo (Śāntigarbha). This teacher was born in the southern city of Jālamaṇḍala, which means Mandala of Water. His caste was royal. From a young age, he studied many subtle fields of knowledge, including phonetics and logic with its branches. His father was also a mantra practitioner who could see the face of the noble Tara in visions. From him, he received the empowerment of Tara and the methods of practice. At the age of twenty-two, in the region of Kongkuna by the sea, there was a monastic establishment called Golden Banner, which at that time had good monastic discipline, a flourishing Dharma school, about fifty monks, and when including lay practitioners, the assembly would reach about a thousand people. There, he received full ordination from Khenpo Ratigupta. First, he thoroughly studied the Hearer's Vehicle, and then he thoroughly studied all the treatises of Madhyamaka and Chittamatra. He recited from memory numerous scriptures such as the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita and what is known as the Four Sutras of Mind-Only. He wanted to offer to the Khenpo and receive great gain and respect, so he went to the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka) for a while. There, he slightly accomplished the vidya-mantra of the Great Black One, and through teaching the Dharma, he gained immeasurable gain and respect. He brought these to the guru and offered them as a great pile of the seven precious substances. When he requested empowerments and teachings, the guru bestowed upon him all the common empowerments and also gave most of the explanations of about fifty tantras. However, he did not give the uncommon empowerment.

There was none. Even after going to the various Tsarya monasteries and asking, no one else had anything to say. Once, an old yogi there said, "That was one of our Tsarya teachers with great power, but it has been many years since anyone knew where he went." After searching again and again, once, in the shade of a stupa near a forest village, there was someone lying down dressed as both a monastic and a householder. When asked, "Have you seen Yeshe Shenyen?" he replied, "I know, and I am going to him. From here to the east, there is a city called Tipura, he is there." When asked for guidance, he said, "If you can carry these possessions of mine to this forest, I will tell you." So, carrying a heavy load, he went with incense. The one dressed as both a monastic and a householder went ahead. Zhiwa Spapa was caught by bandits on the road. When the load was opened, it was found to be only stones. The thieves were very angry and beat him again. As he lay on the ground like a corpse, the teacher came again, washed him with water, and recited mantras, miraculously reviving him so that he could walk. When he arrived in Tipura, he asked for guidance to the lama. He was led to the edge of a lake, where the lama's own reflection appeared in the lake, and he said, "Yeshe Shenyen is this person." He went to see him as instructed and developed a good samadhi. Then he asked to be taken as a disciple, and he said, "What do you hope to gain? To say 'take me as a disciple without seeking gain or honor.'" He became very angry and beat him many times. There, he said to a wealthy patron, "If I work as your servant, how much will you pay me?" The man said, "I will give you one gold dinar each day." He worked as his servant for a year. It is said that the farm work of the Indians is very hard. There, others also gave him many things, and he offered all of these to the teacher. Again, he followed the lama, and once in a dense forest, there was a female buffalo with a nose rope attached. The lama said, "Lead this away." The lama went ahead. As Zhiwa led it away, the owner chased after him and caught him, beating him severely, and he fell to the ground like a corpse. The lama came and revived him with skillful means. Another time, the lama entrusted him with something like belongings, like a grass hut.

He remained. The two, teacher and disciple, went to the city and returned. All the grass houses were burning fiercely. At that time, the lama seemed very worried about his belongings. So, (Shyiva Sbaspa) asked, "Shall I take them?" The lama said, "Go." Then, without hesitation, he entered the fire and took out the lama's belongings. As a result, his hands and feet were burned to the point of exposing the bones, and his whole body was covered in blisters. Even if he died because of this, he thought it was for the sake of the lama's belongings, and he did not feel a moment of regret. It is said that the important items were not many, just a water pot, a coconut shell bowl, a wooden mandala, and a kapala. At that time, (Shyiva Sbaspa) thought he was surely going to die, but the lama healed him in a short time by reciting mantras and using medicine. Then, Shyiva Sbaspa thought, "It is not good that the teacher has used up medicine to heal this bad body of mine. From now on, doing many ascetic practices for the sake of the teacher is only for my own benefit. Therefore, it is very inappropriate to receive mantras and medicine from the teacher. I vow never to use the teacher as my servant." Again, the teacher wanted to go to the land of Rakang, so they boarded a boat. Somehow, a fish with teeth suddenly appeared from the middle of the water. Fearing that it would harm the teacher, (Shyiva Sbaspa) stabbed it with a short spear. The fish bit Shyiva Sbaspa's foot. As the fish was about to drag him into the middle of the water, he remembered the teacher, and the fish released him and swam away. At that time, although (Shyiva Sbaspa) was in great pain, he did not neglect to serve the teacher. One morning seven days later, somehow, the pain disappeared. Later, in a cave in the eastern Rakang area where the teacher was staying, Shyiva Sbaspa had to go to various cities to find supplies and so on, and had many things to do. That place had many rivers, so he had to swim and cross them repeatedly. A creature called Sisara, belonging to the crocodile family, known as "water monster" in Tibet, had also caught him three times, but by the teacher's own power and by remembering the teacher, it only released him. In addition, a creature called Kimkara, as well as fish and water snakes, etc., bit and stung him, and the wounds were countless.

So it is said. For all of that, not even a single mantra or medicine of the lama was taken, all the beneficial methods such as mantras and medicines were obtained from elsewhere. The master stayed there for three years. Together with five supreme retinue yogis, twelve vidyādharīs. The gathering of the wheel of saṃsāra was also enjoyed again and again. The Peaceful Hidden One must do more with other causes and conditions. Because the aquatic creatures of that place are particularly ferocious. Although the body practiced very diligently for three years, not a single bit of weariness arose in his mind. It is said that all of that retinue at that time later attained accomplishment. After that, the master and disciple relied on a boat and went to Bengal. From the first meeting until then, not a single instruction was given, so there he requested to be given instructions. He said, "Without seeking gain or honor, please take care of me." As soon as he received that, he said to the master, "Even the great glorious Vajrasattva is afraid of the one who competes by being superior or equal." So it is said, showing an angry and displeased manner, he ran away and departed. There, he ran with all his might, but could not catch up. For seven days, he searched in all directions of that place, but could not find him. After that, he went far away. He asked people in various cities, but there was no news. Having searched for two months in that way without finding him, he stayed in a city called Ghoraṭaṃḍa, weeping and praying for seven days. He did not come there either. Now he thought, "I have no fortune in this life. I will die right here." He jumped from the top of a rock, but there was no injury to his limbs or anything like that. No harm occurred at all. While he was staying there for a little while, feeling discouraged, a vidyādharī he recognized came in that direction. She said, "What is a good student doing?" Because the master's vidyādharī was a lama, he touched her feet with his head. "I am without fortune, because the lama abandoned me, so I thought to die." She said, "You will definitely be taken care of by the master." There, a little joy arose in his mind. When he asked where the master was staying, she said, "The lama came to my house and stayed for a few days, and now he has gone to Nepal." That woman vanished. After that, the Peaceful Hidden One set out on the road, and as he was going, the people who saw him jump from the top of the rock...
