The merit accumulated previously does not even come close to one part in a hundred. It does not come close to one part in a thousand, one part in a hundred thousand, one part in a million, one part in a hundred million, one part in a billion, one part in a hundred billion, or one part in a trillion. It cannot be compared in number, part, calculation, example, or reason. Therefore, complete dedication is said to be the best, the principal, the sacred, the supreme, the excellent, the magnificent, the unsurpassed, the unequaled. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without clinging, engages in the perfection of generosity, engages in the perfection of discipline, engages in the perfection of patience, engages in the perfection of diligence, engages in the perfection of meditation, and engages in the perfection of wisdom. At that time, with skillful means, he should completely dedicate those roots of virtue to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. As it is extensively taught in these and other ways. Secondly, the reason for dedication is: Like this, the vast accumulations of merit accumulated by abiding in the worldly path, if not transformed into unaccumulated Bodhi, mostly become the fruits of happiness and prosperity in the states of gods and humans and are exhausted. Some are wasted in the Bardo due to the cause of generating endless afflictions such as anger. The root of virtue dedicated to Bodhi never diminishes. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Ocean of Intelligence: Ocean of Intelligence, if a drop of saliva is dropped on dust, it will dry up immediately. If it is dropped into the great ocean, as long as the great ocean does not dry up, that drop of saliva will not dry up either. Similarly, the root of virtue not dedicated to Bodhi diminishes and does not increase, while the root of virtue dedicated to Bodhi does not diminish and increases. As it is said. If

If someone asks, if the roots of virtue of the noble ones who dwell beyond the path of dependence are not fully dedicated to enlightenment, will they be exhausted? It is not so. As it says in the sutra: "Ocean of Intelligence, the Bodhisattvas who dwell on this earth act by the power of their previous actions. Even when they are not dwelling in meditative equipoise, the dedication they made previously will not be exhausted even after a hundred paths. Ocean of Intelligence, therefore, some wise people will understand the meaning of what is said by showing an example, so I will give you an example. Ocean of Intelligence, for example, when a field of sugarcane, a field of rice, or a vineyard has been plowed, a person digs appropriate furrows in all the furrows, then draws water from the canal, lets it flow away, and sleeps. Even if that person is asleep, the water will flow as the furrows have been dug. That person does not need to make effort or exert himself, and all the furrows will be filled with water. Ocean of Intelligence, similarly, even if a Bodhisattva is not dwelling in meditative equipoise, he will fully dedicate those roots of virtue to the minds of all sentient beings, and by skillful means, he will dedicate those roots of virtue to all the Buddha's teachings as they are. Therefore, even if their minds are very pure and they dwell in meditative equipoise in order to protect the aggregates of morality, they will fully dedicate those roots of virtue to all the Buddha's teachings. Because they have previously made good aspirations, they will moisten the minds of all sentient beings. Ocean of Intelligence, you should also understand in this way that whether a Bodhisattva arises from meditative equipoise or the roots of virtue have been initiated previously, the mind is capable, the mindfulness is not distracted, they are free from the lesser vehicle, and they have made aspirations for the great vehicle, it is impossible that the roots of virtue will not be fully dedicated to omniscience even after a hundred paths. As it says in the sutra." Third, the way to dedicate is to identify the roots of virtue to be dedicated and to explain the actual method of dedication. The first is, ordinary people.

In the chapter of dedication of the Great Vajra Banner Sutra, it says, "All the virtues of all beings, those that have been done, those that will be done, and those that are being done." As it is said, and also in the Mother of the Buddhas Sutra, "In the immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable realms of the ten directions, in each of those realms, the immeasurable and countless Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have passed into complete nirvana. From the time they first generated the mind of enlightenment until they manifestly and completely awakened to unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, and until they passed into complete nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder, until the sacred Dharma has not declined, whatever roots of virtue are endowed with the six perfections, and those who have truly entered the Hearer Vehicle, the merit-making activities arising from generosity, the merit-making activities arising from ethics, the merit-making activities arising from meditation, the undefiled roots of virtue of those who are learning, and the undefiled roots of virtue of those who are beyond learning, and the aggregates of ethics, the aggregates of samadhi, the aggregates of wisdom, the aggregates of liberation, and the aggregates of the wisdom of liberation and vision of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the intention to benefit, great compassion, and the immeasurable and countless qualities of the Buddhas, whatever Dharma has been taught by those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and having learned that Dharma, those who have attained the fruit of stream-enterer, the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, the attainment of Arhatship itself, the attainment of self-awakening, and whatever roots of virtue of those who have entered the faultless path of the Bodhisattva, and whether those Tathagatas remain or pass into complete nirvana, all the roots of virtue that have been generated towards them, all of these having gathered together, with the supreme joy of rejoicing, the excellent lord, the supreme holy one, the extraordinary, sublime, unsurpassed, unequaled, with the unequal and the equal, I rejoice.
