Because of emptiness, there is no need to abandon them, just as there is no need to build a dam against a mirage. As the Vajra Sutra says, "Afflictions are like illusions, empty in their essence." And as the Sutra of the Unreturning Wheel says, "Ignorance is like the sky, all phenomena are without characteristics. There is no desire, no hatred, no pride, and no jealousy. Like illusions, their essence is without inherent existence, neither existent nor nonexistent, unattainable, and devoid of support." Secondly, if seized by skillful means, even if afflictions are used, they will not bind but will transform into the path of liberation. Therefore, they are not to be abandoned, just as a medicinal ointment made from poison can eliminate a poisonous disease. As the Ocean Sutra says, "The path of afflictions is great purity, the enjoyment of skillful means is the supreme ornament. Through the play of all things, one quickly transforms into the glorious Heruka." And as the Compendium of Vehicles says, "For those endowed with great skillful means, afflictions transform into limbs of enlightenment." Thirdly, because the five afflictions themselves are the five wisdoms, and are the symbols of the five Buddha families, they are not to be abandoned. Because form and wisdom are not accomplished from substances other than afflictions. Like conditioned things are inherently impermanent. As the Twenty-Eight Root Vows say, "The five afflictions, such as jealousy, are inherently the nature of the five families." Furthermore, what is the necessity of not abandoning them? The nature of the five poisons, the afflictions, should not be abandoned because they possess three necessities. That is, there is the necessity of reversing the clinging to inherent existence. For example, a householder named Minena formerly thought that fire could only burn. Later, seeing the ascetic purifying himself with fire and the behavior of the fire weasel, he reversed his clinging to the idea that fire's heat had only one aspect. Similarly, the clinging of those of the lower vehicles who believe that the five poisons are solely the cause of samsara should also be reversed. Secondly, there is the necessity of generating respect for the profound teachings, because the lower vehicles view afflictions as faults and therefore abandon, prevent, subdue, and transform them. But here, liberation is achieved by using afflictions, which is considered wondrous, thereby generating respectful faith in the profound teachings. Thirdly, there is the necessity of quickly realizing the profound nature of reality, because by realizing that afflictions are inseparable from the nature of reality, one does not need to seek the path and its fruit elsewhere, and certainty is attained. In short, abandoning through antidotes and

If used with ego, it does not go beyond the division of two and two. If afflictions such as hatred are abandoned by antidotes such as love, one strays into the vehicle of cause, and there is also the fault of not being able to eradicate them from the root. If one uses them at will without seizing the means, one falls into the five tantras. As the Lamrim says: "Therefore, without realizing equality, using the five poisons in a mixed way, one revolves in the five tantras." Therefore, the yogi who has confidence in view and meditation, even if he uses afflictions, is not bound, like a peacock living on poison. When afflictions arise due to conditions, he does not let himself be controlled by them like an ordinary person. He does not abandon, block, purify, or transform them like a follower of the lower vehicle, but rather makes them the path, like a fish being comfortable in water. This is the reason for not abandoning, along with its justification. Secondly: white bodhi, red bodhi, excrement, and great flesh. Do not discard the water in a clean vessel. Because these five samaya substances are special substances endowed with the nature of reality, their own essence, power, and blessings, they should not be discarded. There are four reasons for not discarding them: They should not be discarded because they are originally the play of the nature of reality, without acceptance or rejection. As the Limb says: "The nectar is the dharma of original purity, without acceptance or rejection, it transcends all. In the great samaya of original protection, the wise should gladly accept it." They should also not be discarded because the five families are the essence of the five wisdoms. As the Ashes says: "Nectar bodhicitta vajra family mirror wisdom. Similarly, great excrement is the dharmadhatu of the Tathagata. Flesh ratna equality. Rakta lotus discriminating awareness. Urine karma family accomplishing action. The five are the reality of the five families. Great excrement urine bodhicitta." They should also not be abandoned because they eliminate the five diseases. Because white bodhi, red bodhi, large and small excrement, and great flesh sequentially eliminate hot diseases, cold diseases, poison diseases, epidemic diseases, and leprosy. They should also not be abandoned because they have the five powers of nature. In the previous order, one obtains the qualities of non-forgetting dharani, radiance, longevity, melodious voice, and great power. Secondly, there is the explanation of the meaning and the enumeration of names. First, in the second chapter of the Extensive Section, the samaya called "Abandoning the Vajra," up to "Samadhi."
