It is said that in a kalpa called "Kunda," in a Buddha-field called "Manifest Joy," a Buddha called "Akshobhya" appeared. In his teachings, there was a fully ordained monk named "Hard-to-Conquer Youth," who, as it is, turned the wheel of the Great Vehicle's Dharma, abiding in yoga that was completely uncreated and undefiled, becoming a supreme noble being. He saw all sentient beings as sons of the Buddhas and was solely devoted to urging them on. At that time, in that era, samsara was without beginning or end, and the beginningless and endless karma and countless lives could not be exhausted by words. If one were to understand that one moment of karma corresponds to one segment of life, then, nearby, there was a householder named "Keuka," who had a son named "Black Liberation," and that son had a servant named "Danbag." At that time, in that era, some people learned the path of yoga from the monk "Hard-to-Conquer Youth," and all abided in the path of yoga and practiced yoga. At that time, "Black Liberation" thought in this way: I have heard that this monk "Hard-to-Conquer Youth" teaches everything as it is, so will there be doctrines of the path that arise in the same way that everything is practiced happily? He asked some people, and all said that it would happen that way. Then, together with his servant, he went to where the monk was, arrived at the place, and there, having expressed his intention well, he inquired: Great monk, I have heard that you are skilled in showing the path of how everything is practiced, is that indeed so? Having inquired in this way, the monk replied: Son of good family, it is possible that such things will occur. Having spoken in this way, "Liberation," together with his servant, was delighted and rejoiced, saying: Please accept me and my servant as your disciples. I also wish to take from you the path of non-cessation of everything and abide in yoga, so please definitely regard me as a supreme being. The monk said: Yes, very good. Having given his approval in this way, "Black Liberation" was ordained and regarded as a holy being. "Danbag" was appointed as an attendant, becoming the servant of the monk "Liberation." Thereafter, "Liberation" became a monk.

(They) asked: Great virtuous monks, what is the supreme path like? (He) replied: If the nature of reality is not adorned, even if one dwells in and practices the four objects, it is like clouds in the sky. This is the supreme path of a yogi. After saying this, Tharpa, together with his attendant, rejoiced and said: Ema! How skillful in means! It is decided! It is so! It is entrusted! We will all abide completely in this. After asking this, the monk Tharpa only practiced according to the literal meaning of the words, but did not attain the certainty of wisdom. Because he only clung to the words, he only practiced through the four objects, and clinging to this, he placed his body in sacred attire, but his mind entered the path of evil destinies. The attendant Danbag, however, attained the certainty of the fundamental meaning of the words, and was connected with supreme wisdom. Because he only clung to the meaning, he only practiced according to reality, and clinging to this, the complete yogi placed his body in lowly attire, but his mind entered the path of supreme certainty. After that, Tharpa and his attendant disagreed in their views. (Tharpa) said: We two serve the same master and appear with the same words, why is there such a different divergence? Danbag replied: What I am now deciding is only this, and I have not heard of anything else. Tharpa said: I have also now attained certainty, and I only practice this, and I have not heard of anything else. Thus, a great dispute arose between them. Because of the disagreement in views, they parted ways with the attendant, and vowed never to meet again. The attendant then left Tharpa's territory and departed. After that, the monk Tharpa gave rise to a mountain of pride and self-righteousness, and reported to the master the certainty that each had attained. The monk Thubka was young, and practiced in a genuine way without pretense or falsehood. He had no false flattery, and because of his frank and straightforward nature, the master taught: You should decide like Danbag. Tharpa was completely confused after hearing this, and said: If the master is fair, then he should be like both of us. Because (the master) decided unequally, and belittled and refuted me, this master no longer likes this place either. I will make these people my subordinates. After making this vow, he gave rise to great pride, and the master also left Tharpa's territory and departed completely. After that, Tharpa, because the doors of the Tathagata's teachings were numerous and vast, was unable to fully comprehend all the teachings, because the teacher was difficult to measure, so measuring (the teachings)...
