That which is called "the root of all" refers to the root, the mind of enlightenment. It should be fully understood in this way: it should be understood as the Dharma-nature of the minds of all Buddhas and the Dharma-nature of the minds of all sentient beings. It appears as both darkness and light. The Lord of Lanka is also like this: the Bhagavan, the Lord of Secrets, resided for a moment in the womb of the emanation of the Chakravartin with a topknot, called the Secret Place of the Lotus, in the palace of the Supreme Secret. At that time, countless noble beings cut off doubts about the secret of Suchness, completely inquired, diligently inquired, and after doubts were cut off, fell back into doubt. We, the retinue, gathered there and beseeched the Bhagavan, saying: "Bhagavan, we have not seen or perceived the essence of enlightenment, which we call the root of all Dharmas. We have not truly found it, nor have we certainly known it. It is not reached by traveling, so where is it? Where should we seek it? What is it? What should we do with it? Where is it lost? Bhagavan, please reveal it at this very moment. Sugata, please reveal it." After they had requested thus. The Bhagavan spoke thus: "Great-hearted Bodhisattva, the essence of enlightenment, which is called the root of all Dharmas, is unseen because of obscurations, unperceived because of non-existence, unfound because of profundity, unknown because of difficulty, unreached because of speed, and unreached because of vastness. It is in the realm of darkness. Seek it in the three cities. This is the limb, the sutra, and the root. The essence is Suchness itself. It is lost in the realm of darkness. Great-hearted Bodhisattva, therefore, in order to dispel this darkness, one should be skilled in its nature. Likewise, one should be skilled in the essence, the characteristics, the limbs, the duration of existence, the karma, the types of darkness, the similes, and so forth, and the methods of dispelling it. One should be diligent in this. One should understand those who are in the realm of darkness as one. After he had spoken thus, I beseeched him, saying: "Bhagavan, from where does this darkness arise? What is the nature of this darkness? What is the essence of this darkness? What are the characteristics of this darkness? Where are the limbs of this darkness? What is the root of this darkness?

How long does this last? What does the darkness obscure? What is the distinction of this darkness? What is this darkness similar to? Where does this darkness thicken? By what is this darkness dispelled? Why is it called darkness? Why does this thicken? Where does the net gather? Please tell this. Please tell this, O Sugata. After this request, the Blessed One spoke: Great Bodhisattva, know that the root of all phenomena encompassed by darkness and light is gathered without foundation or root. The sutra that teaches in this way is as follows: The place where the Buddha's enlightenment arises, it produces and its essence is itself, like the essence of a lotus opening, its root is in the mire of samsara. The place where all roots arise, the root of no root, is the root of all phenomena, the three realms are gathered in this very place. This Dharma is profound and difficult to see, and difficult to realize, it is abiding on the ultimate ground, even ordinary people cannot see it. This emptiness nature of non-existence, because of existence, cannot be grasped as real. Grasping and non-grasping, the path of words is cut off, non-conceptual, there is no arising. Because of clarity, in endless time, even if one searches universally without leaving anything out, one will not find a thing called "this," one will not find it, nor will it become found. The wise, in endless time, even if they examine very carefully, will not see anything here. Because of speed, in endless time, even if one runs exhausted, one still has not left this realm, has not gone anywhere, nor has one gone. On the tree of unborn Dharma, there are branches of four forms, ripening into the essence of unsurpassed enlightenment, that is the Bodhi tree of all arising. The desire realm of entering meaning, the form realm of grasping what is not manifest, the formless realm of no manifestation, no interruption, that which specializes in the activity of action transforms. That which transforms in the object is entering, know what enters, even if that object becomes the boundary of darkness, in the boundary of darkness it itself appears. Light and the light of light arise, it is the essence of the root of arising. Directional knowledge, definite and indefinite, no self-nature is itself. Just as losing gold in a dark cave, in the darkness of samsara, the Bodhicitta, like precious gold, will be lost. Become the boundary of darkness.
