Therefore, the gathering of the nose is the realm of touch, and because it holds and approaches all things, the gathering of the tongue is the realm of touch, and because it gathers all memories and enters all realms, the gathering of the mind is the realm of touch, and because it holds many gross things and gathers the elements, the gathering of the body is the realm of touch. Therefore, those realms also hold objects. That also arises from the part that holds internally from delusion itself. The aggregates are like this: the aggregate defiled by concepts, and the aggregate of the emptiness of the nature of concepts. The non-discriminating capable one again reported: O Bhagavan, what is the aggregate called defiled by concepts? What is the aggregate without concepts? Please, teacher, tell me. Then you also taught: O great hero, the aggregate defiled by concepts is like this: all things are gathered together and made of cause and effect, so it is the form aggregate, all knowledge is gathered into self, so it is the consciousness aggregate, the experience of remembrance, all feelings are gathered together, so it is the feeling aggregate, the holding of the senses such as the eyes are gathered together, so it is the perception aggregate, subtle afflictions are gathered together, so walking and so on are the formation aggregate. These non-discriminating aggregates are produced by the power of wisdom, and are like this: all meditations are gathered together, so it is the samadhi aggregate, knowledge itself is for the sake of exhausting the outflows, so it is the wisdom aggregate of liberation, the meaning of that itself appears as unborn, so it is the wisdom aggregate, the stains appear manifestly pure, so it is the aggregate of discipline, because it transcends all discriminations, so it is the aggregate of seeing the wisdom of liberation. There are two kinds of faculties: the faculties that arise from the part of form, and the faculties that arise from the part of wisdom. The non-discriminating capable one reported: O Bhagavan, what are the faculties that arise from the part of form? What is the part of the faculties that arise internally from the part of wisdom? Please, Bhagavan, tell me. The Bhagavan taught: O great hero of non-discrimination, listen.

1. These arising from the aspect of form are those arising from the aspect of the senses. The senses are six: the eye sense, which grasps the coarse, fundamental aspect; the ear sense, which grasps the moving aspect of wind; the nose sense, which grasps the gathering aspect of water; the tongue sense, which grasps the ripening aspect of fire; the mind sense, which grasps the pervasive aspect of space; and the body sense, which grasps the assembled aspect of various things. The senses arising from the aspect of wisdom, arising from the aspect of inner knowledge, are six: the faith sense, which is the mind utterly afflicted; the diligence sense, which is the talent of wisdom arising from the aspect of the mind being utterly sharp; the mindfulness sense, which continuously grasps the samadhi of meditative absorption on the meaning of words; the sense of approaching and receiving awareness, where the nature of reality, emptiness, is manifest; the wisdom sense, which understands the meaning of views, the near meaning, and receives in between; and the sense of the mind being utterly pacified, which generates the meaning of non-conceptualization, is self-purifying. There are two kinds of sources: the apprehended source, which is internal, and the apprehending external source. The non-conceptual sage again asked: "O, O, Blessed One! What is the apprehended source? What is the apprehending source? I do not understand these. Please, Blessed One, tell me." Then the teacher said: "Great hero, listen well. To think of form as consciousness, to think of sound as consciousness, to think of smell as consciousness, to think of taste as consciousness, to think of dharma as consciousness, to think of touch as consciousness, the aspect apprehended by the eye, the aspect apprehended by the ear, the aspect apprehended by the nose, the aspect apprehended by the tongue, the aspect apprehended by the mind, the aspect apprehended by the body—these are twelve. The twelve apprehending sources are: numbers and names, the aggregate of form, colors such as white and red, shapes, collections of words, numerous collections of terms, collections of signs, visible and invisible, dependent origination, the self and the non-self of permanence and annihilation, the Hearers, thinking of all as solitary Buddhas, causes and conditions similar to the aggregates of close grasping, and arising.
