I asked Samantabhadra thus: How do the sentient beings of the three realms of samsara, and the outer and inner worlds of container and contents, become confused? Please explain to the assembled retinue. After this request, the Teacher spoke thus to the retinue: Because the essence, which is nameless, inexpressible, and immutable, is not realized, from the self-arising power of the branch skills, I will explain how the unawakened sentient beings become confused. Vajrasattva, please hold it in your mind with respect. From the unborn, uncreated, primordial, ever-existent state, the inherent nature abides in the pre-existing ground. That itself becomes the primordial ground. That itself becomes the ground of nothingness. From that ground of nothingness, that itself becomes the ground of namelessness. Because the nameless nature is not known, it becomes the ground of non-differentiation. That itself is confused as the ground of movement. The nature of movement pervades all. That itself is confused as the ground of pervasion. From that, the primordial wind, which supports the ground, moves without obstruction. That itself is confused as the all-pervading wind. That itself is confused as sudden and dazed. It is confused as a rustling and soughing sound. It is confused as a slight sensation. That itself becomes a slight movement. From that, it is confused as the appearance of rays. Because the rays become the basis of all, abiding there, the universal Alaya arises. It becomes the mother ground of all phenomena and appearances. It is confused as the great expanse of the rootless Dharma nature. It becomes the root of confusion for all phenomena. From that, from self-arising wisdom, the branch skills emanate rays. From movement and non-movement, the subtlest rays move. The nature of the rays is unobstructed, and it is confused as the five lights. From that, the nature of arising is confused. From the nature of light, arising is confused as the branch skill's child. Previously unmoved, it moves only slightly, and from that, it is confused as the moving wind. From that, it is confused as clear awareness. Because the thought of happiness and unhappiness arises, from that, it is confused as the two, feeling and knowing. Because feeling and knowing exist, from movement and non-movement, it becomes the three minds. From the moving rays, knowing arises. Not grasping its own ground, accompanied by the fabricated wind, the names of yes and no arise. Not seeing yes, it is confused as no. Not knowing yes, it knows no. Therefore, it is confused as the darkness of ignorance. Movement is caused by the wind, obscured and covered, interrupted by darkness, and with the branch skill's child as the condition, the door of ignorance and confusion results.

Matures. Awareness is confused into mind and heart. Therefore, the three minds are gradually confused. Awareness seeks everywhere, Wanders in all directions. Confused in the mind that seeks everywhere. The nature of the mind is movement, The mind has no support and is uneasy, Fickle and wavering. Fluttering, without support, Dualistic thoughts of "is it?" or "is it not?" arise. Confused in the mind that determines. Thinking, "There is no one but me." From this, clarity arises in the heart. The nature of clarity has five aspects. Clear, unmoving, unbroken, Unceasing, unchanging, confused into five. Confused in the mind that decides. Therefore, confused into the form of awareness. Therefore, confused into the form of mind. From this, the nature of mind is confused into form. From this, confused into the form of light. From this, five phenomena arise. From this, confused into the five afflictions. From this, confused into the five elements. From this, confused into the five colors. From this, confused into the five appearances. From this, confused into the five essences. From this, confused into the five senses. From this, confused into the five consciousnesses. From this, confused into the five limbs. From this, confused into the five objects and five types. That light form is consciousness, Depending on how each one's karmic imprints are seen, One sees one's own body as good or bad. Some see it as large, some see it as small. Some see it as long, some see it as short. Some see it as round, some see it as elongated. Because of seeing, one is confused into one's own form. Light form and consciousness are confused in this way. Outer and inner, container and contents, unreal and real appearances, The five elements, unreal and real appearances, The five afflictions, unreal and real appearances, The five senses, unreal and real appearances, The five desires, unreal and real appearances, The five aggregates, unreal and real appearances, The five colors, unreal and real appearances, The differences in shape, unreal and real appearances, Male, female, and neuter, unreal and real appearances, Directions and boundaries, unreal appearing as real, Day and night, unreal appearing as real, The sun, moon, planets, and stars, unreal and real appearances, The six realms of beings, unreal and real appearances, Mount Meru and the four continents, unreal and real appearances, Plants and forests, unreal and real appearances, Various enjoyments, unreal and real appearances, Limbs and skills
