There is no desire for the nonexistent; showing with objects leads to non-understanding; showing without objects leads to understanding of non-arising. Likewise, the reality of objects is explained by combining examples and meanings. Hold the meaning of Vajrasattva. Waves forming on the sea, fields, and the king's treasury of gold are the four examples given to represent the reality of the basis. When waves form on the sea, there are no flames, protrusions, heights, depressions, ridges, or valleys; it remains in equanimity. There are four types of basis: the pervasive basis, the abiding basis, the moving basis, and the arising basis. Like the example of waves forming on the sea, the abiding basis abides as follows: it is neither sentient being nor Buddha, neither samsara nor nirvana, neither ignorance nor wisdom, neither conceptual thought nor dharmata, neither happiness nor suffering. It is without symbols, without words, without names, without expression, without teaching, without instruction, without listening, without speaking, without aim, without examination, without appearance, without existence, without attachment, without place, without mind, without distinction, without self, without essence, without separation, without outside, without inside, without grasping, without enemy, without friend, without bias, without father, without mother, without birth, without place, without dwelling, without attachment, without essence, without container, without samsara, without center, without end, without direction, without corner, without white, without black, without color. For all of these, there is no knowledge, no mind, no thought, no aim, no direction, no attachment. That essence which transcends speech, thought, and expression cannot be made in the mind, cannot be counted, cannot be altered by intelligence, cannot be placed in the mind. The nature of all these is the reality of the nature of things. There is no imputation of Buddha or sentient being, no imputation of what is taught or what teaches, transcending the limits of words and letters. The eight consciousnesses are not the reality of objects; ignorance and wisdom abide equally, the door of appearance and the door of delusion abide equally, conceptual thought and dharmata abide equally, Buddha and sentient being abide equally, samsara and nirvana abide equally, happiness and suffering abide equally, abiding in equanimity. This is called the abiding basis. The pervasive basis is as follows: like oil pervading sesame seeds, from the mandala of the victorious ones at the top to the aggregates of hell at the bottom, held by the bodies of beings, it abides pervading all. This is the pervasive basis.

Thus it is said. The basis of movement is as follows: The primordial basis initially moved, The initial basis moved from the very beginning, The basis from the very beginning moved by its own nature, The basis of its own nature moved by pervading, The basis of pervading moved by primordial wind, The primordial wind's basis moved by tholongs, This is said to be the basis of movement. The basis of arising is as follows: From the primordial wind, thollo, A slight movement arose as a part, From that, a slight mental movement arose, From that, it arose in the form of rays, From that, the all-encompassing universal basis arose, From that, the nature of arising arose, From that, it transformed into the form of light, When unobstructed rays of light arose, Skillful appearances transformed into branches and limbs, Skillful appearances did not cling to other places, But again dissolved into the light, When clear children dissolved into the light, Mother and child were inseparable, primordially enlightened, By self-dissolving into the original self-place, Light and rays met, securing their own ground, Cutting through delusion, sealed by the unborn seal, The essence arose from the expanse, Kuntuzangpo, the primordial Buddha, Without cause, condition, or effort, Spontaneously arising, the primordial Buddha, Like precious gold, Remaining unchanging in all ways. Thus, through the four elements, Arising in the mother element, dissolving into the wisdom space, Meeting with the mother of Dharma-nature, Attaining the unborn self-ground, And sealed by the unchanging seal, through these five, The inexpressible realm manifests as enlightenment, The first is the enlightenment of the ground. Like a king's treasury, There are large and small treasures and goods, There are precious gold and turquoise, There are rice and beans, There are valuable and small things, Likewise, from the great treasury of the universal ground, Ignorance arises and wisdom arises, Buddhas arise and sentient beings arise, Samsara arises and nirvana arises, Conceptual thoughts arise and Dharma-nature arises, Happiness arises and suffering arises, Joy arises and displeasure arises, Ego arises and egolessness arises, Object and mind arise and non-duality arises, Bias arises and impartiality arises, Thus and so forth, it is said to be the basis of arising. Thus it is said. Like a precious, bright razor, cutting through deluded appearances with burning force, in the tantra equal to space, the second chapter is the chapter showing the abiding nature of the basis of things. Then Vajrasattva.
