Performing fire pujas, casting mustard seeds, repairing roads, and diligently accumulating merit will immediately pacify all obstacles. Once these are pacified, merit will greatly increase, and all causes of non-merit will also be pacified. Fifth, pacifying obstacles through steadfast faith: External enemies for a yogi, such as haters, loved ones, bad friends, bad teachers, and so on, create obstacles and hindrances to listening, contemplating, and meditating. Whatever internal afflictions and the eight worldly concerns arise as obstacles, recognize them as demons. At that time, meditate on the recollection of impermanence and death, and contemplate the suffering of samsara and the three lower realms. Generate great armor-like courage and possess unwavering faith that cannot be swayed by external circumstances. To avoid being controlled by attachment to this life, exert intense, irreversible diligence. Obstacles cannot overcome those who possess both faith and diligence. The Sutra states: 'Just as it is difficult to turn back a great river, so too, it is difficult for demons and their kind to divert from the path or create obstacles for courageous Bodhisattvas who possess wisdom, steadfast faith, irreversible diligence, and courage.' Sixth, pacifying obstacles by transforming the yogi's mind: Generally, all external and internal demons arise from one's own manifest afflictions, discursive thoughts of clinging and attachment, and the eight worldly concerns. The Vajramala Tantra states: 'From the yogi's determined practice, five obstructing demons arise: the demon of discursive clinging, the demon of equanimity and laziness, the demon of indulgence in enjoyment and distraction, the demon of harsh words and sharp weapons, the demon of anger, fury, and confusion. These five demons of the yogi obscure the true meaning.' Furthermore, the Compendium states: 'That Bodhisattva who praises himself and disparages others is completely deluded by demons and becomes foolish.' And again: 'Where is enlightenment for one who is hateful and lacks patience? At that time, the demons and their retinues rejoice.' And again: 'Alone, not thinking about the meaning'

It says: If the difficult-to-tame mind is not tamed, teaching the Dharma in the midst of many retinues, being distracted by profit and fame, is the work of demons. Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by Noble Akashagarbha, it says: Just as wind enters through a hole, so too, wherever there is a flaw in the mind of a yogi, demons enter and find an opportunity. Therefore, the mind of a Bodhisattva should be free from flaws such as afflictions. The absence of flaws in the mind is this: thus, one should perfect the emptiness that possesses all supreme aspects. Thus it is said. Therefore, a yogi, in all times and circumstances, in all four types of conduct, should examine his own mind-stream, and constantly rely on mindfulness and awareness. One should not abide with minds of all afflictions, such as minds of desire, minds of hatred, minds of delusion, minds of pride, minds of jealousy, and so forth. One should not abide with minds of all yogic thoughts, such as minds of attachment, minds of stinginess and frivolity, minds of fear, minds of joy and displeasure, minds of doubt and hesitation, minds of hope and suspicion, and so forth. One should not abide with the eight worldly dharmas, such as delighting in gain and respect, and being displeased when they are absent; being pleased when comfortable and happy, and displeased when suffering; being pleased when praised, and displeased when criticized; being pleased when hearing pleasant sounds and having fame, and displeased when hearing unpleasant sounds and having no fame, and so forth. In short, one should completely abandon all clinging to things and characteristics, which gives rise to the grasping of "I" and "mine." One should abide in the manner of knowing all dharmas to be emptiness. Abiding in the manner of being without characteristics, abiding in the manner of being without aspirations, with the Bodhicitta of loving-kindness and compassion, with the mind of equality of all dharmas, with the mind that all dharmas are like dreams, illusions, and the sky, with the mind that all dharmas are impermanent, unstable, and subject to change, not being permanent, constantly with a peaceful mind, with a tamed mind, with an upright mind, with a mindful mind, with an aware mind, with a cautious mind. By abiding in this way, if one's own mind-stream is pure and without flaws, then the external and internal demons will not find an opportunity.
