A Manual on Identifying and Eliminating the Causes of Demons: "Victory Over Demons" A Manual on Identifying and Eliminating the Causes of Demons: "Victory Over Demons" A treatise called "Victory Over Demons," a manual on identifying and eliminating the causes of demons. May we be victorious over the hosts of demons! Sole protector who saves beings, inseparable refuge of the Three Jewels, I prostrate to the victorious ones and their sons. O Blessed One, for the sake of beings, I will briefly write down the manual on identifying demons, which comes from the scriptures and oral instructions. In general, for practitioners who strive to attain Buddhahood, there are countless types of demons that obstruct practice before a stable path is attained. In brief, they can be divided into general demons and specific demons. The first has four types: The afflictions, both subtle and gross, that arise from self-grasping lead one astray and obstruct the path to liberation; these are the demons of affliction. Grasping the five aggregates of contaminated existence as self binds one to the suffering of samsara and obstructs the path of uncontaminated existence; these are the demons of the aggregates. Taking life prematurely, before one has completed the path, is the demon of death. The divine demon is the lord of the desire realm, the delighting in emanation, along with his consort, retinue, and sub-retinue, countless hosts of demonic deities. Their activity is to cause arrogance to arise from the brow of the evil demon and his wife, and so forth. Whomever they strike with the five arrows of flowers, the most dominant of their five poisons will blaze forth. Being influenced by this, one will fall away from the path of enlightenment. His retinue, the four guardians of the world, are: The demon of strife causes those who practice the path to engage in disputes and quarrels with others. The demon of distraction creates distraction and busyness, and increases sleep and drowsiness during times of listening, contemplation, and meditation. The demon of attachment especially obstructs householders. When giving alms, one thinks that these food and wealth are needed for oneself and one's children, and generates the thought that one cannot bear to give alms as if cutting off one's own flesh. The demon of perverted views will

They greatly harm those who have renounced. When one wishes to renounce, they remember the pleasures of sexual intercourse, as well as food, drink, relatives, songs, dances, and so on, and they become attached to those things. Their own relatives and others dissuade them with various temptations and sins. And for those who have already renounced, they again remember the pleasures of sexual intercourse, as well as former lovers, and business, agriculture, craftsmanship, and medicine. They desire to busily engage in worldly affairs, and even in dreams, they manifest as women to seduce them, and they cause their vital essence to decline. In these and many other ways, they cause their pure conduct to decline or become defiled. Furthermore, urged on by the four Maras, malevolent nagas and yakshas steal the lives of those who possess the Dharma and cause illness in their bodies. The thirty-six types of demonic pretas frighten meditators with many unpleasant forms and unpleasant sounds. They also show the Buddha's body adorned with marks and signs, and by generating pride and arrogance, they create obstacles. Thus, the reason why Maras hate practitioners of the Dharma is that, for example, if someone rebels against their lord, the king will fight against them in various ways. Similarly, when fortunate individuals turn their minds away from samsara, generate faith in the Three Jewels, and strive in the three practices of hearing, contemplation, and meditation, the Maras think, 'This has gone beyond our sphere of influence and has become the sphere of influence of the Buddha, the Bhagavan. All sentient beings will also go beyond the realm of Mara,' and they become displeased and try to create obstacles in any way possible. Also, just as the children of enemies become suspicious when they see an intelligent person, and strive to eliminate them before they mature, similarly, when the Maras know that the mind of enlightenment has arisen in the minds of individuals who possess faith, diligence, intelligence, and sincerity, the Maras will cause many harms to occur. Thus, when practicing the sacred Dharma, the Maras also strive to create many obstacles, and the Buddhas of the ten directions also strive to liberate them from those obstacles. The manner of this effort is clearly explained in the Sutra Collection and other scriptures. That also depends on how the individual who practices the Dharma exerts effort in the Dharma, whether it is great, medium, or small.
