Locations and opportunities will not be found. As it says in the Compendium: "Walking, standing, sleeping, and sitting, be fully endowed with mindfulness and awareness. Observing like a yoke, the mind is not distracted while walking. Holding clean and pure clothes, the three are in a solitary and pleasant place. Not desiring to gain, the supreme ones always desire the Dharma. Having transcended the realm of the maras, not relying on others." And again: "With four causes, one is skilled and powerful in enlightenment. Difficult to be overcome by the four maras, and unable to be moved, Knowing emptiness and not abandoning all sentient beings, Acting as spoken and having the blessings of the Sugata." In the Noble Jewel Heap Sutra, it says: "One is subdued when endowed with four dharmas." What are the four? Not being jealous of others' gains, Completely abandoning slanderous words, Causing many beings to take up roots of virtue, And cultivating unobstructed love." It is said that just as thieves do not come to those without wealth, and enemies do not come to those without burdens, similarly, maras do not enter those without conceptual thoughts. It is said, "If one constantly relies on mindfulness and awareness, Wrong thoughts and signs cannot approach." Thus, for those skilled in repelling maras, all outer and inner maras arise as friends on the path, because they are the spur of diligence, the inner aid of realization, the connection of accomplishments, and the cause of enhancing experience. Therefore, maras are emanations of the Buddha and conditions for the teachings, for all Buddhas of the three times have the intention not to completely subdue and eradicate maras and heretics. For those with faith and diligence, the outer, inner, and secret maras may bring about major and minor obstacles, but if one has this instruction on examining maras, one will not be controlled by maras except for past karma. If one is endowed with armor-like courage and is embraced by a noble lama, whatever obstacles arise from maras are whips to spur on faith and diligence. If attachment to samsara is completely overturned, and one has great wisdom and much learning, then all obstacles from maras become great aids on the path of a yogi. Realizing the nature of ultimate reality, knowing the characteristics of appearances of phenomena, whatever happens to that yogi,

This is a clarification of experiential realization. If the mind relies on the meaning of equality, And acts spontaneously without attachment or calculation, Then whatever adverse circumstances arise, They become a great adornment of yogic wisdom. Those who are not embraced by a noble lama, And lack the wisdom of hearing and little instruction, Those who have passed away due to bad karma from the past, Even if they have faith and diligence, are carried away by demons. Therefore, with faith and diligence, Until stability in the mind is attained, Always rely on a noble lama. If that is not possible, rely on impartial instructions. In short, cherish the instruction of examining demons. Realizing that all phenomena are empty, Not abandoning compassion for sentient beings, Steadfastness in vows and commitments, Devotion to the lama and the Three Jewels, Whoever possesses these four, Is victorious over demons. In reality, in the true nature of reality, There is not even a name called "demon." The demons of the mundane world, Are conceived by the deluded minds of individuals. For the yogi who realizes the ultimate truth, The mundane demons and obstacles become great friends. Demons and obstacles are the objects of observation for wisdom. Without demons and obstacles, there is no object of observation. Demons and obstacles are the objects of meditation for the mind. Without demons and obstacles, there is no object of meditation. Demons and obstacles are the objects of action for the mind. Without demons and obstacles, there is nothing to act upon. Demons and obstacles are the impetus for the mind. Without demons and obstacles, there is no impetus. Demons and obstacles are the means of enhancing experience. Without demons and obstacles, there is no enhancement. Obstacles are the bridge to accomplishment. Without obstacles, there is no accomplishment. Suffering is the path to happiness. Without suffering, there is no happiness. Afflictions are the very nature of wisdom. Without afflictions, there is no wisdom. Conceptual thoughts are the mirror of reality. Without conceptual thoughts, there is no reality. For the yogi who possesses awareness, There is nothing that is not a quality. All adverse circumstances are the best of friends. Whatever is done, whatever arises, is a path of goodness. From the collection of precious instructions, this is a condensed version of the chapter on examining and dispelling demons, slightly reduced and compiled as a notebook. May there be auspiciousness! The instruction on examining the cause of demons and dispelling them is called "Victory Over the Maras."
