Relying on suffering to purify my sins, recognizing suffering as the whip of sin, I gladly accept it. Relying on suffering, I develop renunciation towards samsara and compassion towards sentient beings. Because of arising discrimination between good and evil, recognizing suffering as the spur to virtue, I gladly accept it. Suffering suppresses the head of arrogance, destroys the corners of jealousy, extinguishes the splendor of desire, and guides the arrival of accomplishments. Therefore, recognizing suffering as the adornment of the mind, I gladly accept it. With three reasons, cultivate patience, not minding the harm-doer: Sentient beings are ignorant, controlled by afflictions, and will cause harm to themselves, let alone to others? Thinking this way, regard the harm-doer as an object of compassion, and thus practice patience. Moreover, because of my own past actions and improper present conduct, harm-doers appear. Thinking this way, attribute all blame to myself, and thus cultivate patience. Relying on enemies, my accumulation of patience is perfected, and they become companions on the path to enlightenment. Therefore, regard enemies as beneficial friends, and thus practice patience. With three reasons, contemplate the profound Dharma निश्चित (Tibetan: ངེས་པར།, Devanagari: निश्चित, Romanized Sanskrit: niścita, Literal Chinese meaning: certain), and thus cultivate patience: When contemplating the ultimate truth of emptiness free from elaboration, contemplate that both the harm-doer and the harmed lack inherent existence, and thus cultivate patience; When contemplating the conventional truth of dependent origination as illusion, contemplate that everything is driven by conditions, and both the harm-doer and suffering lack autonomy, and thus cultivate patience; When contemplating the union of the two truths as one's own mind, contemplate that anger is purified in a state of being without foundation and severed from its root, and thus cultivate patience. Fourth, the perfection of diligence. It is divided into two: abandoning the three opposing factors of laziness, and generating the six supporting factors of strength. First, urged on by the iron hook of impermanence, abandon the laziness of inactivity; contemplating the joy of the sacred Dharma, abandon the laziness of attachment to evil deeds; uplift your own mind, and abandon the laziness of discouragement. Second, the six strengths are: contemplating the benefits of virtue and the faults of sin, thereby generating faith in the Dharma, this is the army of effort and faith; with firm courage making vows, persevering in the virtuous roots that have been started to the end, this is the army of steadfastness in the main practice. This is further divided into three: taking the rising of the sun in the world as an example, not allowing obstacles to dominate, not being shaken by adverse conditions; like the sun

Like the horn of a rhinoceros, using it as an example, one alone, not relying on others, defeats the hordes of demons and accomplishes perfect enlightenment. Like the sun illuminating all, the wisdom, compassion, and aspiration of a Bodhisattva bless oneself as sustenance for beings, undertaking the task of benefiting beings as vast as space. These are the three prides of action. Viewing oneself as supreme, not being tainted by subtle or gross downfalls, this is the pride of being able to do. Viewing afflictions as inferior, especially suppressing unfavorable factors, this is the pride of afflictions. These are the three prides. Thinking of being extremely delighted in accomplishing one's own virtuous deeds and roots of merit, without expecting fruition, joyfully accepting, this is the army of special joy. When one's own strength is weakened and one becomes very discouraged, temporarily abandoning (the task) in order to accomplish it again, this is the army of abandoning to dispel obstacles. Through mindfulness and awareness, diligently engaging in the activity of destroying afflictions, thereby destroying what should be abandoned, this is the strength of diligent acceptance. Freely controlling one's own three doors of body, speech, and mind, remembering cautious words with mindfulness, independently learning all that should be learned, this is the strength of control. These are the six strengths. Fifth, regarding the perfection of meditation, there are two: abandoning the opposing factors to meditation and focusing the mind on the object of calm abiding. First, abandoning the opposing factors has two aspects: abandoning the world and abandoning conceptual thoughts. First, abandoning the world: if one is attached to one's own parents, relatives, friends, retinue, and other sentient beings, and is controlled by them, one's mind will not be able to focus on one point. Therefore, one must abandon association and busyness with them and dwell alone in secluded monasteries and other places. Even there, if one is attached to gain, respect, praise, and fame, as well as immediately needed items, and strives for them, it will obstruct the correct path. Therefore, one must cut off all hope and doubt, be content with whatever one has, and strive to learn. Second, abandoning conceptual thoughts: even if the body dwells in a secluded place and does not pursue many possessions, if the mind is controlled by desire, genuine meditation will not arise in the mindstream, and one will not be able to concentrate. Therefore, one must abandon these. In particular, in order to attain superior higher concentrations, turning away from attachment to desire is very important, because accomplishing this cause is very difficult.
