There is a difference in function. If one engages in clinging to mere names without investigation or analysis, one will walk blindly, saying 'I go, I go,' and remain stubbornly, saying 'I stay, I stay.' Similarly, 'I do good,' 'I confess sins,' and so on are reasonable, because for mere names, both agency and objecthood are reasonable. Likewise, one should understand conventional symbols and terms and apply them to everything. The second case is that when seeing a collection of dung, the thought 'it is a cow' arises, but the thought 'it is a dog' does not arise. This is because of the difference in whether it is named that way or not. Similarly, when seeing the aggregates or any part of them as the basis of imputation, the thought 'it is I' arises because 'I' and 'mine' are imputed to that basis of imputation. Therefore, one should understand all phenomena in this way. Who imputes? Conceptual thought imputes. For this reason, it is not established by its own nature but is established only as a conventional designation. The third case is that illusion is used as an example for the meditation of a yogi. That is, even though the illusionist himself sees the appearance of the illusion, he is not deluded by it. Similarly, there are two ways to meditate: meditating with the power of experience means that through the power of a samadhi that has become potent, without relying on mindfulness, one meditates on a continuous stream like an illusion, ascertaining that from the mere appearance, there is not even a little bit of inherent existence. If there is no certainty of view, then whatever appears will arise aimlessly like a blind person, and even the power of the mind cannot control it, so it is not permissible to meditate like an illusion. The second is to meditate with mindfulness, which means holding it with mindfulness. Although the thought 'it is I' appears as if 'I' is inherently existent, one should draw the certainty that 'I' is merely an appearance and that there is not even a little bit of inherent existence, and then meditate. That is, for that thought, it is impossible for both 'I' is inherently existent and 'I' is not inherently existent to appear simultaneously, and these two separate ascertainments will not occur simultaneously for one person, so one must rely on the uninterruptedness of another consciousness to ascertain it. This is the actual method for present beings to meditate on the selflessness of persons. Likewise, one should understand this for other things as well. Second, there are two ways to meditate on 'mine' as not being inherently existent: meditating in samadhi and meditating in post-meditation. The first way is that the eyes, nose, etc., are the basis of imputation for 'mine,' and one should control the thoughts 'it is I' and 'it is mine' like controlling an object. If the thing grasped by that thought were established in its own right, then 'mine' would be established by its own characteristic. If one clings to this as real and clings to it as 'mine,' then this is the innate self-grasping, clinging to the self of persons.

It can be categorized under the scope of the ego-grasping of persons. If the 'self' to be refuted is established nominally, then the person who refutes the 'self' must also be established nominally. However, through the reasoning mentioned earlier, it can be understood that the 'self' is not established at all. Therefore, realizing that the 'self' has no inherent existence whatsoever is the view to be cultivated in the aspect of the selflessness of persons. The method of cultivation and the way of employing mindfulness are the same as before. Second, the cultivation in the post-meditation period is to cultivate that it is merely a name, an imputation, and like an illusion. This also requires applying the previous reasoning. Through the reasoning mentioned earlier, it can be understood that all persons from hell beings to Buddhas, and their 'self,' what their basis of imputation is, whether it is the same entity or a different entity from the basis of imputation, do not have inherent existence. One must understand that the selflessness of persons and all 'self' are without inherent existence. Second, the cultivation of the selflessness of phenomena is divided into two aspects: cultivation in the meditative equipoise and cultivation in the post-meditation period. First, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, etc., that are included and not included by one's own continuum are all phenomena. These phenomena appear as if they are established nominally, but clinging to this appearance as real is the self of phenomena and ego-grasping. Recognizing that they are not established in this way is the selflessness of phenomena. The method of determining this is: the east, west, etc., directions of form are the relationship of parts and whole; the past, future, etc., times of consciousness are the relationship of parts and whole. Examine whether these two are established nominally, whether they are one entity or different entities, and then refute them as before. Phenomena and persons are also established in dependence on the collection of their respective bases of imputation. If they are born in dependence and established in dependence, then it is impossible for what is depended upon and what is inherently established to be one entity. If they were one entity, then all actions and agents would become one entity; these two also cannot be inherently established as different entities, for if they were different, then because the connection is negated, relying on it would be contradictory. Through this and the previous reasoning, determine that there is no inherent existence whatsoever, and then cultivate it by employing mindfulness as before. Whether it is a person or a phenomenon, one must search with correct reasoning that can determine the ultimate meaning, to see how they are established nominally. In the end, one will thoroughly realize that there is nothing to be found established nominally, and one must maintain the continuity of this realization. Second, the cultivation in the post-meditation period, as mentioned in the section on the selflessness of persons, is to cultivate the post-meditation like an illusion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
