How to meditate (on Madhyamaka): Even if it is established only nominally, the ultimate truth that negates true existence should be regarded as an illusion; and the appearance of phenomena that appear in emptiness should also be regarded as an illusion. Of these two, the latter is what should be meditated on here. Just as mindfulness is cultivated on conceptual thoughts, how should a practitioner cultivate sensory consciousness in the present? When sensory consciousness engages with an object, mindfulness should grasp it in such a way that sensory consciousness manifests the object, and one should ascertain that there is no nature of consciousness whatsoever in sensory consciousness, and lead this ascertainment into one. One should learn to perceive appearance as emptiness and emptiness as appearance, like an illusion. Furthermore, one should generate firm conviction in the ways of being named in dependence, established in dependence, and arising in dependence. After such continuous practice of meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment, once a thought arises in the post-meditation state, whatever appears will appear like an illusion. Third, at the end of the (practice), one should dedicate the accumulated merits to temporary and ultimate aspirations with strong intention through practices such as the 'Bodhicaryāpraṇidhānarāja' (King of Prayers) and the 'Seventy Verses of Aspiration.' For ordinary individuals who have not yet attained tranquility, this profound way of cultivating the Madhyamaka view is recorded by Gelek Palzang according to the intentions of Je Rinpoche (Tsongkhapa) and his sons.
