Collected Teachings of Master Tsongkhapa JTs181: A Booklet on the Profound Path of the Madhyamaka View of the Prasangika School. 18-8-1a A Booklet on the Profound Path of the Madhyamaka View of the Prasangika School. A Booklet on the Profound Path of the Madhyamaka View of the Prasangika School. 18-8-1b I prostrate and take refuge in the lotus feet of the omniscient Je Rinpoche (Tsongkhapa), inseparable from Je Jampel Yang (Manjushri), in all my lives. Please hold me with great compassion in all my lives. Here, the method of contemplating the view of the Madhyamaka Prasangika school is in three parts: preliminaries, main practice, and concluding practice. The first is the preliminaries. The Guru Yoga (spiritual practice of union with the Guru) as taught in the Lamrim Chenmo (Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment) and Lamrim Chungwa (Concise Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment) composed by Je himself, as well as the practices for individuals of small and medium capacity, the mind training practices, and the general teachings on the practices of a Bodhisattva, are all preliminaries to the view. In particular, it is important to rely on a scholar who knows the essential points of the scriptures without distortion, to listen to the pure teachings, and to cultivate the view of realizing suchness (tathata) through the wisdom of hearing and thinking, as well as the accumulation of the causes and conditions for vipassana (insight meditation). After thoroughly contemplating the benefits of the view of realizing selflessness, one develops a strong conviction and a desire to seek the view. Furthermore, one should be convinced that following the thought of the noble Nagarjuna (Nāgārjuna), as explained by the glorious Chandrakirti (Candrakīrti), will lead to finding the ultimate key to the view, and one should develop a desire to learn how to cultivate the view of that school. These are the main aspects of the preliminaries to the view, and one should strive to generate them in one's mindstream. The second is the main practice, which is definitively divided into two: the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. The order is also definite: first, the object to be negated is the self of the person, then the negation of the self of the person, then the separation of the selflessness of the person; then, the object to be negated is the self of the aggregates, then the negation of the self of phenomena, and then the mere separation of the selflessness of phenomena. Although it is not asserted that there are subtle and gross differences between the two, there are differences in the difficulty of ascertaining them. Therefore, one should first contemplate the selflessness of persons and then contemplate the selflessness of phenomena. Thus, the method of contemplating the two selflessnesses is divided into two: contemplating the selflessness of persons and contemplating the selflessness of phenomena. First, contemplating the selflessness of persons is divided into two: contemplating that 'I' is without inherent existence and contemplating that 'mine' is without inherent existence. First, contemplating that 'I' is without inherent existence is divided into two: shamatha (calm abiding) and vipassana (insight meditation). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
