First, like a vigilant watchman with discernment, one must ascertain how the appearance of 'I' (藏文: པ་ན་,pana,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:I) occurs. Even if the thought of 'I' does not arise, one should deliberately cultivate the thought of 'I', and as soon as it spontaneously arises, examine its appearance. In this way, one can know how it appears in its own way, unmixed with other phenomena. The thought that examines the appearance arises simultaneously with 'I', while the thought that ascertains the appearance arises in the second moment of 'I'. Generally, the innate mind of self-grasping does not manifest the appearance of the aggregates, and especially not simultaneously with the thought of 'I'. If it seems that the appearance of the aggregates arises in relation to 'I', it is because it occurred prior to 'I', and is not an appearance to 'I'. Therefore, without losing the thought of 'I', by slowly observing from the side, one will see that the thought of 'I' has a unique appearance, which is neither the aggregates nor anything else. The thought of 'I' does not merely appear as a name, but appears as something stable. Grasping it as established according to its appearance binds one to samsara. Therefore, if one understands well how the innate thought of 'I' appears, one can identify the object to be refuted. One should also examine how the characteristics, appearances, and ways of clinging manifest on 'I', 'mine', and other things like the aggregates. Second, if that appearance were established, there could not be a third possibility between 'one' and 'different'. Therefore, 'I' and 'my aggregates' must necessarily be either 'one' established in reality, or 'different' established in reality, because in reality, a third possibility is excluded. Whatever appears to consciousness, it invariably appears as either an unparalleled 'one' or a contrasting 'different', because there is no third possibility in those two appearances. Therefore, the pervasion that the absence of 'one' and 'different' necessarily implies the absence of truth is established. Third, divided into two parts. The first part is the ascertainment that 'I' and 'my aggregates' are not 'one' established in reality. If the appearance of 'I' and the aggregates were 'one' established in reality, then it would have to be established as absolutely 'one'. If that were the case, then the present aggregates would also have to be the same. So, is 'I' one with the present collection of body and mind, or separate? If it is one with the collection of body and mind, then it would follow that one would come from the previous life to this life with that collection, and go from this life to the next, because 'I' is one with the present collection of body and mind. 'I' is separate from the present body and mind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
