This is about the actual method of training our minds, the measure of its arising, and eliminating wrong perceptions about it. First, it is divided into two parts: cultivating the mind of seeking the benefit of the afterlife, and relying on methods for happiness in the afterlife. The first part is further divided into two aspects: recollecting death, that we will not stay long in this world, and contemplating the happiness and suffering of beings in the two realms in the afterlife. The first aspect is further divided into four parts: the faults of not meditating on death, the benefits of meditating on death, what kind of mind to generate when recollecting death, and the manner of meditating on death. Here, there are three aspects: contemplating that we will definitely die, contemplating that it is uncertain when we will die, and contemplating that at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma can help us. The first aspect is further divided into three parts: contemplating that the Lord of Death will definitely come and cannot be averted by any means; contemplating that our lifespan is constantly decreasing, with no opportunity to increase it; contemplating that even while alive, we may not have time to practice the Dharma before dying. The second aspect, contemplating the uncertainty of the time of death, is divided into three parts: contemplating that the lifespan of Jambudvipa (the human-inhabited planet) is uncertain; contemplating that the causes of death are very many, while the causes of survival are few; contemplating that our body is very fragile, therefore the time of death is uncertain. The third aspect, contemplating that at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma can help us, is divided into three aspects: body, wealth, and relatives. Second, contemplating what will become of the afterlife, contemplating the happiness and suffering of beings in the two states. Among the two, contemplating the suffering of the lower realms is divided into three aspects: the suffering of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. First, hell is divided into four types: great hells of sentient beings, neighboring hells, cold hells, and solitary hells. The first type is further divided into eight: the suffering of the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Howling Hell, the Great Howling Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, and the Uninterrupted Hell. The cold hells are divided into eight: the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Chattering Teeth Hell, the Achuchu Hell, the Huhu Hell, the Cracked Like a Blue Lotus Hell, the Cracked Like a Red Lotus Hell, and the Great Cracked Like a Red Lotus Hell. Contemplating the suffering of hungry ghosts is divided into three aspects: food and drink have external obstructions, food and drink have internal obstructions, and food and drink themselves are obstructions. Second, seeking methods for happiness in the afterlife is divided into two aspects: entering the gateway to the Dharma, cultivating the supreme refuge; and cultivating faith, the root of all happiness. The first aspect is divided into four parts: relying on what as the cause of refuge, relying on what as the object worthy of refuge, to what extent to take refuge. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The manner of taking refuge: the order of what to learn after taking refuge. Based on this, there are two aspects to the object worthy of refuge: identifying the object, and the reason why it is worthy of refuge. The manner of taking refuge is fourfold: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, making a commitment, and not speaking of other refuges. Firstly, there are three aspects to knowing the qualities: the qualities of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Firstly, there are four aspects to the qualities of the Buddha: the qualities of the body, the qualities of speech, the qualities of mind, and the qualities of activity. There are two aspects to the qualities of mind: the qualities of wisdom and the qualities of compassion. There are six aspects to knowing the distinctions: the distinction arising from the nature, the distinction of activity, the distinction of faith, the distinction of practice, the distinction of remembrance, and the distinction arising from the activity of increasing merit. There are two aspects to the order of what to learn after taking refuge: arising from the general and arising from the pith instructions. Firstly, from the general, there are two sets of four items. The first set of four items is: relying on the noble individual (व्यक्ति,vyakti, person), listening to the noble Dharma, properly applying the mind, and practicing the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma. The second set of four items is: not letting the senses run wild, properly taking the basis of training, being compassionate to sentient beings, and diligently making offerings to the Three Jewels at all times. From the pith instructions, there are two: the individual trainings and the common trainings. Firstly, there are two aspects to the individual trainings: the trainings to be abandoned and the trainings to be cultivated. There are six aspects to the common trainings: repeatedly taking refuge by remembering the distinctions and qualities of the Three Jewels; by remembering the kindness, always diligently making offerings and offering the first portion of food and drink; by remembering compassion, encouraging other beings to act in this way; whatever action is done or whatever need there is, offering to the Three Jewels and praying, abandoning other worldly means; knowing the benefits, taking refuge three times during the day and three times during the night; not abandoning or protecting the Three Jewels even for the sake of laughter or life. Knowing the benefits, taking refuge three times during the day and three times during the night has two aspects: the benefits arising from the general and the benefits arising from the pith instructions. Firstly, from the general, there are two sets of four items. The first set of four items is: obtaining great merit, obtaining joy and supreme joy, obtaining samadhi, obtaining purity. The second set of four items is: protection. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
