One should practice for a long time to cultivate a Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind) that is not artificial. Then, having understood the practices of a Bodhisattva (enlightenment being), generate the desire to learn, and if one is capable of taking on the responsibility of a Bodhisattva's conduct, take the Bodhisattva vows and study its precepts, generally the six perfections, and particularly the nature of Samatha (calm abiding) – using quiescence to make the mind workable, and the nature of Vipassanā (insight) – studying insight that realizes all phenomena as illusion and like the sky. Then, if one is capable of taking on the responsibility of the Vajrayana (diamond vehicle) vows and precepts, listen to the 'Fifty Verses on the Guru,' purify the ways of relying on the Guru, and then enter into mantra. If one has not practiced these previously explained stages of the common path, one will not be able to cut off the clinging of this life, and a firm desire to practice Dharma will not arise; sincere faith will not arise, therefore one will not wholeheartedly take refuge; one will not gain firm conviction in the law of Karma (cause and effect), therefore one will not be able to protect any vows, and one will become a lax practitioner without meticulous discipline; genuine renunciation will not arise, therefore the pursuit of liberation will only be superficial; a genuine aspiration Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind) rooted in loving-kindness and compassion will not arise, therefore one will only be a Mahayanist (great vehicle) in name; a strong desire to learn the general practices of a Bodhisattva will not arise, therefore a genuine entering aspiration will not arise; a pure understanding of the general Samatha (calm abiding) and Vipassanā (insight) will not be formed, therefore one will be mistaken even in subtle Samadhi (meditative concentration), and conviction in the view of selflessness will not arise. If one wishes to accomplish these, one should practice the common path of the two vehicles. This is the instruction where the three rivers merge, from the venerable Maitreya (慈氏) to Asanga (无著), from the venerable Manjusri (文殊) to Nagarjuna (龙树), and the lineage of Shantideva (寂天), whether entering the Vajrayana (diamond vehicle) or the Paramita (perfection) vehicle, one should joyfully practice, this is the intention of Jowo Rinpoche (Atisha). Jetsun Milarepa (至尊密勒日巴) also said: 'If you do not think purely about the cause and effect of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, The suffering of the lower realms is unbearable, You should be mindful and aware, Guarding even the subtle ripening of Karma. If you do not see the faults of desirable objects, And do not turn away attachment from within, You will not be freed from the prison of Samsara (cyclic existence), You should rely on the antidote to the origin of suffering, With the wisdom that knows all as illusion. If you do not repay the kindness, Of sentient beings, parents of the six realms, There is the fault of straying into the Hinayana (lesser vehicle), Therefore, with great compassion, You should train in Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind).' And: 'I, fearing the eight unfree states, Meditated on the faults of impermanent Samsara (cyclic existence),' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ྱབས་ 9-2-4a
