In summary, the fourteen root downfalls can be categorized into three groups: The transgression lies in any action that leads to wrongdoing. These actions are all related to a misunderstanding of the Three Jewels (དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་,the Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). The first category is the first root downfall. The second category explicitly includes the defamation of a virtuous friend and the intimacy with an unvirtuous friend. The former includes the third and twelfth root downfalls, while the latter includes the tenth root downfall. The third category is related to the Dharma of scripture and the Dharma of realization. The former includes: particularly praising self-made Dharma, slandering the Dharma of the three vehicles, and proclaiming secret Dharma that should not be proclaimed. This corresponds to the second, sixth, and seventh root downfalls. The latter is related to the Dharma of realization, including the wrong understanding of the basis, essence, and limbs of the path. First, since Bodhicitta (སེམས་བསྐྱེད་,Bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment) mainly lies in generation, therefore, sentient beings who generate Bodhicitta for any purpose, and the attachment to self-nature, correspond to the fourth and fifth root downfalls. The essence of the path includes the generation stage and the completion stage. The wrong understanding of the former corresponds to the eighth root downfall. The latter can be summarized as emptiness and bliss-emptiness union. The wrong understanding of emptiness corresponds to the ninth and eleventh root downfalls, while the wrong understanding of bliss also corresponds to the eleventh root downfall. Third, the limbs of the path include the basis and companions of practicing the path. The wrong understanding of the former corresponds to the thirteenth root downfall, and the wrong understanding of the latter corresponds to the fourteenth root downfall. Secondly, wanting to protect the vows requires contemplating their benefits and drawbacks. The six lines of 'Mantrika' etc. elaborate on this: A Mantrika who has received the empowerment of unsurpassed secret mantra and holds vows and precepts, if he does not violate and protects these fourteen root vows, can achieve common siddhis, such as the activities of pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and wrathful, as well as siddhis such as eye medicine pills; he can also obtain uncommon siddhis, namely the state of Mahamudra (ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེན་པོ,Mahamudra, the Great Seal). The drawbacks are: If one violates the vows spoken of in accordance with the Dharma, and does not protect the vows, it will lead to the breaking of the vows. This breaking will be seized by demons and Rakshasas, leading to many unpleasant things such as diseases and life-threatening dangers in this life, and suffering various kinds of pain. Immediately after death, one will fall headfirst into hell. Thirdly, the actual method of protecting the vows is: The two lines of 'Therefore' etc. explain that protecting the vows has immeasurable benefits, and not protecting the vows will produce all the drawbacks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

如经文'mnyam par zhes sogs rkang pa gnyis so'所说。

With diligence, destroy all the doors of transgression that arise from ease, maintain mindfulness, awareness, and caution, and strive to guard the vows you have taken. Second, if the vows are impaired, there is a method for restoration, as stated in the verse 'mnyam par zhes sogs rkang pa gnyis so'. If a root downfall occurs and causes the vows to be impaired, do not let your mind wander, but focus single-pointedly on meditation. Exert whatever respect you have for the lama, make extensive offerings, and starting from refuge, a mantra practitioner who wishes me well and desires benefit should take the uncommon mantra vows with great effort. Third, regarding the activity of completing the explanation, as stated in the verse 'rdo rje zhes sogs so'. Although Vajrayana (rdo rje theg pa) (Diamond Vehicle, vajrayāna, vajrayāna, Diamond Vehicle) refers only to the mantra vehicle (gsang sngags kyi theg pa), here it refers to the unsurpassable yoga. Now, we will explain how to guard these vows. As stated in the chapter on collecting these vows, remember the situations that may lead to downfall. There are three ways to guard against the first root downfall: cultivating respect, pleasing the guru, and obeying the teachings. First, do not criticize the guru, and cultivate the mind of seeing the guru as possessing qualities. For the former, prevent the thought of wanting to find fault. If a thought arises that sees the guru as having faults, do not accept it, but seek an antidote to prevent it. Second, do not think that there is no need to do anything just because you think the guru is perfect. Third, do not abandon the responsibility of pleasing the guru through thought, and prevent abandoning pleasing the guru through action due to inability. If something is not in accordance with the Dharma, or if you are unable to do it, you should strive to study and practice. Similarly, you should also understand how to obey the guru's teachings. The key points of these teachings are: all Tathagatas depend on the guru, therefore, see the guru as possessing qualities, abandon the thought of seeing the guru as having faults, strive to please the guru, and act according to the guru's teachings, so that you can attain accomplishments. Conversely, if you act improperly, you will only increase decline. Therefore, those who wish themselves well should contemplate the above-mentioned benefits and drawbacks, and strive to treat the virtuous friends who are connected to the Dharma with the above-mentioned methods of guarding the mind. If you strive to do this, you will avoid the first downfall. Preventing the arbitrary alteration and degradation of the Dharma will prevent the second transgression. Preventing the desire to criticize those who merely speak of the Dharma, and preventing the desire to cut off the sharing of the Dharma among vajra brothers and sisters.
