Is it so? In order to establish the 'other-exclusion' which possesses the valid means of establishment, I will explain. Regarding the activity of knowing 'meaning', there are two ways: establishment and analysis. The non-conceptual, experiences the self-nature of meaning, and from other causes, it is established as distinct, although established, it excludes what is attached to others, thereby distinguishing it. For example, excluding attachment is the function of discriminating wisdom. This comes from the certainty of knowing commonly used external objects, and from the contradiction of attachment. Because if it is not so, it would lead to an endless fallacy. Therefore, it does not rely on determining attachment. When engaging in refutation and establishment, although there is no increase or decrease in the meaning itself, there will be increase or decrease in the mind, which is understood as the result of analysis. Just as many servants accomplish all the affairs of the lord, many expressions and discriminations also tend towards one great goal. Here, there are two types of exclusion: non-affirming negation and affirming negation. Contradictory to the nature of 'not this', for things with the same result, it merely distinguishes different kinds, whatever is established is affirming negation. Therefore, it cannot be said that it is 'this' or 'that' with respect to things. Because it would lead to the fallacy of confusing meanings. Thinking 'non-existence' is also unreasonable. Non-affirming negation also has two types: the distinction between mind and meaning. Arising from the power of experience, the discrimination with the image of meaning, just as seeing one thing as different from another, this appearance is of the mind. In order to distinguish attachment, and in order to show the difference from others, it is called 'other-exclusion'. Relying on distinguishing different kinds, therefore it is also considered 'other'. The self-nature that exists without being mixed with others is also called the exclusion of meanings by the wise. These all according to number, because of excluding others, it is exclusion itself. For external and internal things, it is impossible to name them, therefore, for those who speak of the ultimate truth, there is nothing that can be said. Even among cowherds there is fame, and in order to avoid the fallacy of the interruption of words, who would deny the meaning of sound in conventional truth? Therefore, relying on conventional truth, the meaning of sound should be investigated. Through the distinction between things and imputation, the meaning of sound is considered to be two types. According to the person who explains and understands, the meaning of sound also becomes two types. Whoever is the person who names sounds, after fully analyzing external objects, thinks 'this with this', thereby boasting of being the namer. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, what is the result of studying symbols? When entering into meaning from sound, due to the habit formed by beginningless imprints, even when seeing self-appearance, it is like someone with blurred vision, like seeing a double moon. Therefore, arrogance of looking outward arises. Therefore, both the speaker and the listener think that external speech and understanding are unifying the meaning, thereby entering into the external meaning. Although all sounds carry erroneous meanings, in order to reveal untrue meanings, it is like a dream, with both truth and falsehood. By obtaining or not obtaining meaning, distinctions are made with correct or incorrect terms. Therefore, for the person who enters into it, relying on the statement that sound and meaning are external, there is no valid measure that hinders it. If analyzed, this is also unreasonable; even if it superficially seems to be speaking of external things, it is actually only symbolizing the image of concepts, because external things do not appear. Therefore, that itself is the meaning of sound; whatever appears in the knowledge arising from sound is the meaning of sound. If understood in other ways, there is no end to it. That is also the image of concepts; there is no other reasonable explanation besides the image of concepts. There is no other act of speaking besides generating things with conceptual ghostly images. Therefore, the entity of this spoken object and the speaking subject is both the cause and the result. Understanding the image from sound, negating the non-existent through implication, is also fully understandable. Because the imposition is real and is the subsequent result, understanding it in reverse is implication. Because subsequent things depend on power. Due to the connection of the lineage, all speech exists without deceiving meaning. Because the desire to express arises from experience, the wind is driven, and then the tongue and palate, etc., come into contact with each other, from which the words of expression arise. Therefore, the two situations of negating the non-existent and distinguishing meaning, through approximate imposition, do not hinder the expression of meaning as sound. It is impossible for one thing to be multiple at the same time, and multiple things will not be confused into one. Therefore, terms such as universals and common ground do not exist in the ultimate sense. Because in the knowledge arising from stable imprints, things appear that way, and because of the result of obtaining meaning, it is unreasonable to deny non-existence. Because the self-natures of things are different, but similar results are seen, therefore, the mind fictitiously thinks they are one, thereby applying the term of universals in the mundane world. Just like the jewels on the close variegated wool, one thing manifests various self-natures; because this manifestation exists, there are terms such as common ground. Whether external meaning exists or not is not important; what is important is the desire of sound to express. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
