The Sutra says that benefiting beings is done through the Perfection of Diligence. If one hears harsh words of abuse from others, the wise Bodhisattva thinks: Who is speaking, who is hearing, who to whom, and for what? Possessing the supreme Perfection of Patience is being wise. Any Bodhisattva who possesses the virtue of patience, even if they filled three thousand worlds with jewels and offered them to the world, could not surpass the merit of offering to Buddhas, Arhats, and Pratyekabuddhas. A body abiding in patience becomes completely pure, possessing the thirty-two marks and limitless power and strength, proclaiming the profound Dharma of emptiness to beings. The patient one makes beings happy. If someone takes sandalwood from a being, while another respectfully anoints a Bodhisattva with fragrance, and yet another throws firebrands at the Bodhisattva's head, the Bodhisattva should generate equanimity towards both. Having thus practiced patience, the wise Bodhisattva generates the mind of enlightenment and dedicates it to supreme enlightenment. The hero, through patience, overcomes all Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas and all sentient beings in the world. One who practices patience should generate the mind like this: The hells, the realm of hungry ghosts, and the world of Yama are full of suffering. If one is powerless to bear suffering due to desire, why not endure for the sake of enlightenment? Whips, sticks, swords, killing, binding, and beating, as well as beheading, cutting off ears, noses, hands, and feet—all the sufferings of the world, I will endure, thinking thus. The Bodhisattva abides in the Perfection of Patience. Through discipline, those who desire peace will become noble. Abiding in the realm of the ten powers, discipline will not decline. Following all disciplinary actions, one also dedicates them to enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. If one desires to attain Pratyekabuddhahood, Arhatship, and enlightenment, but one's discipline is lax, one is not virtuous, and one's conduct is not in accordance with the Dharma. If one dedicates all peaceful enlightenment, even if one is diligent in desires, one abides in the Perfection of Discipline. The Dharma that certainly brings forth the qualities of enlightenment is the meaning of discipline for those who possess qualities. The Dharma that benefits beings is the

When discipline is completely ruined, it is called a breach of discipline, as it is well proclaimed. If a Bodhisattva enjoys the five desirable qualities, takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and aspires to attain Buddhahood, focusing on omniscience, the wise should understand that they abide in the perfection of discipline. If one practices the ten virtuous paths for millions of kalpas, but desires to attain the state of a solitary Arhat, then a flaw occurs in discipline, and discipline is ruined. Generating the aspiration for enlightenment is heavier than the root downfalls. Protecting discipline and dedicating all virtues to supreme enlightenment, one is without arrogance, does not praise oneself, and completely abandons the thought of "I" and the thought of sentient beings. The Bodhisattva is said to abide in the perfection of discipline. If a Bodhisattva practices the path of the Victorious Ones, thinking, "These sentient beings are disciplined, and those sentient beings are undisciplined," engaging in various discriminations, then one is extremely undisciplined. Discipline is ruined, and there is no pure discipline in that. For whom there is no thought of "I" and no thought of sentient beings, for one who is free from the thought of desire, how can there be vows or non-vows? For whom there are no vows or non-vows, and no arrogance, this is called the discipline of discipline. Whatever sentient being is pure and thus disciplined, has no view of what is pleasing or displeasing. Giving away head, feet, and hands, one has no fear. Giving away all possessions, one has no constant attachment. Understanding that all phenomena are selfless in nature, like illusions, and even giving away one's own flesh without fear, then what need is there to mention giving away external objects? If one is miserly, there is no place to abide. Attachment arises from clinging to things with the thought of "I." How can foolish people have the mind of generosity? A miserly person will be reborn in the realm of pretas. Even if reborn as a human, one will become poor. At that time, the Bodhisattva, knowing the poverty of sentient beings, will be delighted in giving and will always give generously. Adorning the four continents with jewels, one sees them as like ashes of spit. One rejoices in giving, but not in obtaining the four continents. The wise Bodhisattva clearly sees all sentient beings in the three realms, thinking, "May this generosity be given to all those sentient beings."
