. Is Madhyamaka the concept of holding onto emptiness? It differs from the saying, "Maintaining an undiminished grasp, like twisting iron wire." Secondly, the main practice is to introduce the nature of awareness itself, which is divided into two types of minds: those with appearances as objects and those with awareness as self-appearance. Firstly, those with appearances as objects cannot directly bring awareness into the path. Therefore, whatever thoughts arise, they are all grasped with mindfulness and left uncorrected, thereby cultivating the contemplation of movement, abiding, and purification. This is further divided into two types of shamatha: with signs and without signs. Firstly, with signs, one trains in holding the mind on the white syllable Ah (藏文:ཨཱཿ,梵文天城体:आः,梵文罗马拟音:āḥ,汉语字面意思:阿) with signs, holding the mind on the syllable Phat (藏文:ཕཊ,梵文天城体:फट,梵文罗马拟音:phaṭ,汉语字面意思:啪) to destroy conceptual thoughts, holding the mind on the syllable Ha (藏文:ཧ་,梵文天城体:ह,梵文罗马拟音:ha,汉语字面意思:哈) of the wrathful deity's joyful laughter, and holding the mind on the syllable Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) for expulsion, and so on. The completion stage without signs involves training in the generation stage of perceiving samsara and nirvana as the guru, and the completion stage of the mind and wisdom being inseparably mixed, thereby introducing awareness, and so on. Secondly, those with awareness as self-appearance are introduced from the perspective of the three origins, abodes, and destinations, thereby enabling the direct pointing out of awareness, the path-making of wisdom, and the naked direct pointing out of wisdom, thus enabling the cultivation of the nature of awareness. Introducing awareness is divided into the way of recognizing awareness and introducing it as the three kayas. Firstly, the way of recognizing it includes recognizing it through the power of the transference of blessings, recognizing it on the basis of the view of abiding in reality, and recognizing it on the basis of experiential meditation. These can be understood from the ninth chapter of the Dharmadhatu Treasury, from the way of introducing it without relying on key points and the six ways of introducing it relying on key points. Secondly, introducing it as the three kayas involves explaining the ground, explaining the appearance of the ground, explaining the way of liberation of Samantabhadra, and explaining the way of delusion of impure sentient beings. Firstly, this is further divided into showing the seven flaws of the ground and separately explaining the ground of the unsurpassed self-doctrine. Firstly, the seven flaws of the ground are explained as follows: The first, those who consider the ground to be primordially pure, say that the ground is of a nature that is primordially free from all elaborations, but they do not grasp the spontaneously accomplished appearance aspect of the unceasing primordial luminosity. Although it is reasonable from the aspect of the emptiness of essence, since the primordially pure emptiness itself does not possess ignorance, samsara cannot be established. Since there is no wisdom, nirvana is impossible, and thus it would become annihilationism. Thoughts have no power.

Meditating by focusing on an empty space is pointed out as a common deviation that loses the essence of Dzogchen. The second is to consider the ground as spontaneously accomplished: to consider both samsara and nirvana as spontaneously accomplished on the ground. This is reasonable from the perspective that the unobstructed radiance manifests as various appearances. However, if one absolutely thinks so, existence will turn into separate, eternal entities. Without abandoning the ground, one cannot abandon samsara. It is impossible to realize nirvana through the completion of accumulations, etc. It is impossible for samsara and nirvana to have a common basis in one mindstream. The third is to consider the ground as undetermined: to consider that the nature of the ground, which is the mind, can transform into either samsara or nirvana, and therefore is absolutely undetermined. This is reasonable from the perspective that the ground is free from elaboration and samsara and nirvana are not established. However, if it is undetermined in meaning in every way, then purity will revert to impurity, or impurity will become the nature of purity, and because there is no fixed boundary, samsara and nirvana will become confused. The fourth is to consider the ground as fixed, the actual basis of meaning: to consider the ground as self-nature, uncompounded, and unchanging. This is reasonable from the perspective that the ground is a temporary appearance without adventitious defilements. However, if one absolutely thinks so, samsara will not appear, and if nirvana is definitely present on the ground, then it will become independent of the path. The fifth is to consider the ground as capable of being transformed into anything: to consider that the nature of the ground is influenced by conditions, and therefore can be transformed into either samsara or nirvana. This is reasonable from the perspective that when the appearance of the ground arises from the ground, the term transformation is merely a designation for becoming liberation or delusion from recognition or non-recognition. If one thinks that the nature of the ground can be transformed, then one must think that there is an entity that can be transformed. If it is permanent, it cannot be transformed. If it is impermanent, it does not need to be transformed. The sixth is to consider the ground as capable of being affirmed as anything: If the ground, which is the nature of the mind, can be affirmed as anything at all, such as samsara, nirvana, existence, non-existence, etc., in every way, then the basis of liberation must also be affirmed as the basis of delusion, and the basis of delusion must also be affirmed as the basis of liberation. Even the son of a barren woman must be affirmed as capable of creating samsara and nirvana. The seventh is to consider the ground as diverse: to consider that various phenomena of samsara and nirvana arise from the ground, and therefore these phenomena are the nature of the ground.
