In general, this Luminous Great Perfection has two aspects: first, the history of the lineage, and second, the instructions that arise from it. The history of the lineage can be learned from other sources. The instructions are divided into the ripening empowerments and the liberating instructions. The former has three aspects: the base empowerment, the path empowerment, and the fruition empowerment. The base empowerment has four aspects: the vase empowerment, the secret empowerment, the wisdom empowerment, and the word empowerment. The path empowerment is receiving the four empowerments based on the profound guru yoga. The fruition empowerment is taught when awareness has reached its full measure. The liberating instructions have two aspects: Trekchö and Tögal. Trekchö has three aspects: preliminaries, main practice, and concluding practice. The preliminaries have three aspects: demolishing the house of the mind. First, cutting the root of thoughts. Searching for flaws. Examining the three places of origin, dwelling, and destination. First, cutting the root of thoughts: From beginningless time until now, in the realms of the three realms of samsara, like the pulling of a water bucket, like the potter's wheel, the three doors of body, speech, and mind wander uncontrollably, without a leader or a driver. Examining which of the three, body, speech, and mind, is the most important. Even though there is a mind independent of body and speech, it does not initially know the difference between virtue and vice, it does not know how to practice in the middle, and there is no place for the fruition to ripen in the end. Examining the body, speech, and mind of the victorious ones above, the body, speech, and mind of sentient beings below, and the body, speech, and mind of the dream realm, it is not understood which is the most important. Then, shifting awareness, from beginningless time until now, through the cycle of birth and death, even though countless bodies and speeches have been abandoned and taken, if one examines only the continuity, one can understand a little. Then, shifting awareness, at the time of death, the winds and mind of the previous life are gathered, and from the clear light of the Dharmakaya of death, even though body and speech are not formed at the time when the winds and mind first arise, due to the power of delusion, body and speech suddenly form, and the three gather together, and the realms of the three realms are formed by the three karmas of white, black, and immovable karma, and it is understood that the maker of samsara is the mind." } ] ============================================================

Recognizing that the mind is primary in the direction of samsaric defilement, and that mind-essence is primary in the direction of pure nirvana, is an instruction like identifying a thief. Second, searching for flaws is: the mind, like a painter, apprehends in terms of one and different. Sometimes, like water and milk mixed together, it apprehends the body and speech as "I," the self of a person. Sometimes, like livestock and a herdsman, it apprehends "my body and speech" as the self of phenomena. This is how it apprehends in terms of one and different. If that is the case, then just as the body and speech are material and have shape and color, the mind must also have them. Or, since the mind is consciousness and is not an object of sight and hearing, the body and speech should also become conscious and should not be able to be seen or heard, but that is not the case. Similarly, when examining others' minds of anger and attachment, and thoughts of enemies and friends, in terms of one and different, neither one nor different is established. Third, examining the three places of arising, dwelling, and going: First, examining the place of arising and the ariser: When a thought like "This is a pot" arises, from what does the object, the pot, the body, flesh, blood, etc., the appearing object, arise? That itself is burned and destroyed into particles, and the basis of the object is established as without foundation or root. Examining and analyzing the nature of the ariser itself, consciousness is established as objectless emptiness. In the middle, without a place of dwelling or a dweller, the object and the subject are established. Finally, when establishing the place of going, the object above, below, the four directions, etc., and the nature of the subject itself, it is realized that neither the object nor consciousness is established. Thus, by establishing the three places of arising, dwelling, and going, the first thought is established as the unborn Dharmakaya, the second as the unceasing Sambhogakaya, and the third as the Emanation Body of appearance, liberation, and non-cessation. Having established it in this way, the container and contents, including illusory appearances, are absent, and there is only clear appearance. Like a comb, a dream, and an illusion, there is only a single non-appearance, without basis or root, consciousness is objectless, and in the state of emptiness and non-action, remaining in equanimity in a state like a butter lamp is superior to the view of the Middle Way. On the basis of that superiority, the special qualities are: the state of dwelling has clarity, the state of clarity has appearance, and the state of appearance has liberation. Remaining in a state free from all elaborations of the four extremes is the correct view of the three places of arising, dwelling, and going.
