Not approaching enlightenment with any prior mixture, it is wonderful to laugh at weariness! The meaning of what was said is exactly that. Therefore, regarding the distinction between mind and rigpa, there are also two distinctions regarding existence and essence. First, the essence of mind is that even if the six consciousnesses wander in objects, as long as they are grasped by mindfulness, the mind abides in clarity and emptiness; or, it remains stunned after just remembering; or, when the sounds of the five senses have not ceased, the manner of appearance in which the mental consciousness does not conceptualize anything, these three are seeing the essence of mind. In that state, if mindfulness is cultivated, then all three can become the basis for generating something like the samadhi of a child's play. This is what is said in the questions and answers of Gonpo Tulku, and should be understood. Second, the essence of rigpa is primordial liberation, not something sudden, but liberated from the beginning. 'Ye' (ཡེ་,梵文:ādi,IAST:ādi,meaning: primordial) means without action or effort, not coming from anywhere, not going anywhere, and there is nowhere to abide. 'Liberation' is not like expulsion, so there is no need to strive through view, meditation, and action. It means abiding in one's own nature, without alteration. And what is that like? Wisdom is clearly self-luminous, the expanse is openly empty, and rigpa is nakedly pure from the beginning. If liberated, then all conceptual thoughts of arising and feeling are liberated into the primordial expanse. If abiding, then abiding in the state of the three kayas. If manifesting, then manifesting as the play of wisdom. If equal, then equal in the state of non-duality, it is said. There are also two distinctions regarding the manifestation of potential. First, the potential of mind is, for example, like the moonlight of the fifteenth day mixed with the land, it is a dharma that does not go beyond the grasped and the grasper. Second, the potential of rigpa is self-liberation, that is, one liberates oneself, meaning there is no other antidote, that is, whatever arises in the mind, all arises as self-born wisdom, and grasping and conceptualization have become primordially liberated, just as when going to the treasure gold island, even if one searches for ordinary mud and stones, one cannot find them. Therefore, it is necessary to properly distinguish between such mind and rigpa. In the Treasury of the Supreme Vehicle, it is also said that mind without thought and rigpa without thought are the same in non-discrimination, but rigpa is transparent, and mind has the difference of abiding and swirling in a sticky manner. Rigpa is self-arising, objects appear, and conceptual thoughts

Although both situations are similar in that they dissipate into their respective objects, one involves wisdom arising thoroughly and liberating into non-grasping, while the other involves thoughts clinging to the grasper and the grasped, following after external objects—there is a difference between these two. As it is said. Furthermore, abiding in a state free from the arising and gathering of thoughts, without conceptualizing place, time, or location, is itself quiescence, so it should not be considered meditation. At this time, the clear and lucid awareness, in the realm of fresh, unadulterated consciousness, the clear essence of wisdom-awareness is thoroughly present; recognizing this is the crucial point. Also, when awareness arises in an object, looking at whatever arises, etc., should not be considered meditation. This is the unceasing play from the self-power of the unchanging king, the Dharmakaya, arising without obstruction and liberating without benefit or harm, like a thief in an empty house; this is the path of the master of power of accomplished yogis, as held by the followers of the great scholar Vimalamitra. If one does not understand such a meaning, holding the mind focused inward or looking at scattering towards external objects, etc., and grasping this as the essence of meditation, it would be a great mistake. Merely abiding is like a god of meditative absorption; merely arising is like an ordinary thought, so even if one meditates, there seems to be no hope of attaining Buddhahood. The terms "essence primordially liberated" and "display spontaneously liberated" refer to non-dual, self-arisen wisdom, but those meditators who do not understand this also think of essence and display as abiding and arising. To those who cultivate display arising as liberation, the great lord of the lineage, the omniscient Ngakgi Wangpo, refuted them with the claws of scripture and reasoning, saying that this is a manifestation of practice falling into two extremes, not understanding the key point, and not truly fitting. The terms "display" and "play" mean that display is the uninterrupted way of arising, like the surface of a clear mirror; play is the diverse manifestation of phenomena, like the eight similes of illusion. The distinction between the alaya and the Dharmakaya is that the alaya is the basis of all of samsara and nirvana; all the thoughts of the display-appearance lie dormant in the state of the unlabelled, in which the clear essence of wisdom-awareness is hidden, like turbid water. In the "Discrimination of the Three Essentials," it says: The alaya is the basis of all of samsara and nirvana, and it is no different from turbid water.
