In the sky of the youthful vase body, the inner clarity merges without obscuration. The subtle wisdom, the all-knowing lord, is inseparable in the center of the heart. Regarding this, for beginners, although it is said that mind is the most important when examining body, speech, and mind, are the root of existence, self-grasping, and co-emergent ignorance the same? They are not the same. Self-grasping has the nature of clear view, while ignorance has the nature of not knowing and not being clear. By what power does the root of existence, self-grasping, arise? It arises from the power of ignorance. This is being deluded about self, viewing as self, being proud of self, being attached to self, which are the four uncommon retinues, and the five all-pervasive ones, possessing the nature of nine retinues. Because it focuses on the alaya consciousness and grasps that \"I\" exists, it is said that mind is the most important. If one does not understand this, then saying that mind is the most important in all activities such as going and staying is a false sign, because without body and speech, one cannot perform actions such as going, staying, and speaking merely by thinking with the mind. In the context of the three origins, searching for the mind and determining that it is free from the three of arising, abiding, and ceasing. Furthermore, since the mind has no essence whatsoever, there is no cause for arising in the beginning, so the cause of arising is empty. Since it does not arise in the beginning, there is no master who abides in the middle, so the essence of abiding is empty. Since it does not abide in the middle, there is no cause for ceasing in the end, so ceasing is empty by its own nature. Therefore, from the beginning, it is free from the three of arising, abiding, and ceasing, and it cannot be found no matter where one searches. As Sakya Pandita said: \"For that which does not arise in the beginning, how can abiding and ceasing exist? Thinking about no arising and no ceasing is conceptual thought, leave it alone.\" Thus, it should be understood. When distinguishing between mind and awareness, there are two types of individuals: those with dull faculties and those with sharp faculties. First, those with minds focused on the objects of appearance are those whose mental impurities have not been purified, so it is difficult to make the wisdom that transcends the mind the path. Therefore, one should first look at the face of awareness." }, { "original_tibetan": "པར་བྱའོ། །", "chinese_translation": "应观之。", "english_translation": "One should look at it." } ] ============================================================

It is important to observe the mind before observing. Regarding this, if we approach it from the three aspects of abiding, moving, and awareness, as in Mahamudra, then abiding is the state where all the arising and ceasing of thoughts are pacified, abiding like a waveless ocean; moving refers to any arising of good or bad thoughts; awareness is the knowing that discerns the strength or weakness of the moving when maintaining the continuity of abiding. These are merely spoken to guide individual beings onto the path. In reality, when abiding, in the face of consciousness, there is only the appearance of emptiness, and there are no other characteristics. As Shantipa said, "Clear empty awareness without exertion, is also abundant among animals in peaceful abiding." When moving, observing the nature of whatever arises, recognizing one's own nature, relaxing in the natural state, etc., the Omniscient One's Oral Transmission says that this is not the correct path. There are two aspects: the conceptual thought to be observed and the memory of the observer. Grasping at duality is the root of samsara, the source of suffering, and an obstacle on the path. Therefore, recognizing both abiding and moving, when this recognition merges into the realm of realization, it is a very dangerous wrong path. Memory or awareness is intended for beginners, guiding them by presenting memory as the actual practice of meditation. Whether it is abiding, moving, or awareness, none of them go beyond the scope of memory, therefore the term "mindfulness of activity" is used. Furthermore, sometimes when the mind is distracted by external objects, one thinks, "I am distracted," and then rests without modification. This is a thought of grasping at emptiness. Sometimes, as soon as one feels distracted, the one who is distracted disappears into the natural state, which is the correct initial way of practice. However, if one then examines the one who feels again, that is harming the natural state with a conceptual mind. Also, sometimes after leaving whatever arises in the mind unmodified, nothing happens, and it becomes completely empty. If one then gains certainty and thinks that this is the view of original purity, that is grasping at emptiness. Gaining certainty is a thought of grasping at permanence. For such meditators bound by the memory of subject and object, the appearance of memory will arise as the wheel of wisdom.
