I take refuge in the Three Roots, especially according to the supreme method of Vajra Essence: To accomplish the body, I rely on the great essence of the channels as the Nirmāṇakāya; to accomplish speech, I train the indestructible five winds as the Sambhogakāya; to accomplish the mind, I take refuge in the swift path of purifying the essence of bindus as the Dharmakāya. In such a special essence of the Vajra body, the channels, winds, and bindus, relying on the great unchanging bliss and the great emptiness endowed with all supreme aspects, the power of the great clear light bindu, inseparable in union, arises. All the subtle and coarse channels, winds, and bindus that have become impurities, if grasped by skillful means, will manifest as the appearance of pure wisdom; if not taken onto the path, they will manifest as the appearance of impure delusion. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature of the Vajra body as explained in the three pitakas of tantra, agama, and upadesha. The ultimate, infallible refuge of the Vajra nature is: the non-dual, self-arisen wisdom residing in the mind-streams of these refuges, the mind of enlightenment, the essence of emptiness, the Dharmadhātu, the emptiness endowed with all supreme aspects. The self-luminous, spontaneously accomplished wisdom, the all-pervasive wisdom of great compassion, is the great maṇḍala of meaning to be cultivated in one's own mind-stream. Among these, the essence of emptiness is the Dharmakāya and the Guru, the Buddha Jewel. The self-luminous nature is the Sambhogakāya and the Yidam, the Dharma Jewel. The all-pervasive compassion is the Nirmāṇakāya and the Ḍākinīs, the Sangha Jewel. Some say that the uncommon refuge of Secret Mantra is not included in the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. But it is included here, because the Guru does not go beyond either ordinary or noble beings, so he does not go beyond the Buddha and the Sangha. The Yidam is generally to be regarded as a single wisdom being, and from the perspective of individual manifestations, he does not go beyond peaceful or wrathful forms, so he is included in the Buddha. The heroes and Ḍākinīs are clearly stated in the Guhyasamāja Tantra and other texts as being among the Sangha of Vidyādharas, so they are included there. In particular, taking the Three Roots as an example, generally, the Gurus are equivalent to the Buddha and the Sangha.
