Even with karma and body, rebirth is not certain. There is no established antidote for abandoning karma and body. Refuting the view that asceticism is the antidote to karma. Firstly: If there is no craving, how can one be liberated even with karma and body? A person without craving: Even if karma and body remain, it is not possible to be reborn in samsara (梵文:Samsara,轮回), because there is no single cause—afflictions. Just as sprouts do not grow without seeds. This is pervasive. Because rebirth there is due to the three causes: karma, body, and afflictions. If abandoning karma and body becomes the path, then, an aspirant for liberation: It is unreasonable to diligently pursue abandoning karma and body without realizing the abandonment of afflictions. Because the antidote for abandoning karma and body without realizing it cannot be ascertained by pramana (梵文:Pramana,量,means of knowledge). And, without abandoning afflictions, there is no ability to abandon karma and body. If there were, then bad karma and body would arise again. Therefore, one should strive for a method to exhaust both karma and craving. If so, then, even if one strives to exhaust both karma and craving, it is meaningless to toil merely for the sake of exhausting karma, because its antidote is not established by pramana. Thirdly: The teacher of the naked ones (Jainas), such as Vardhamana (梵文:Vardhamana,增长者,the founder of Jainism), says: The sign of the absence of an antidote is not established, because by enduring the suffering of the body, one exhausts the ripened results of past karma by experiencing them, and since one does not accumulate new karma, one is liberated. A person: Because there is karma that can produce different results, and because one can see through pramana various situations such as the magnitude of experiencing results, one can infer that the karma of each sentient being (梵文:Sattva,有情,sentient being): The afflictions of asceticism such as pulling hair, that is, a miserable thing, cannot exhaust the ripened results experienced by all of you women. Because you are karma that can produce various ripened results. Its establishment is: The suffering of fasting: Does not make the ripened results of all other karma that are dissimilar to the karma of experiencing one's own ripened results smaller, because only the result produced by the single karma of experiencing one's own ripened results becomes smaller. If, by the power of asceticism, the powers of karmas are mixed together, so that by experiencing one ripened result, all ripened results are exhausted, then, is that asceticism a virtuous or a painful result of bad karma? The first case. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If according to this statement, a portion of affliction, such as merely recognizing a single hair, then, could you (referring to karma) completely abandon or completely eliminate the body? Because you have eliminated a portion of the ripening of karma. The reason is admitted. Furthermore, all the ripened results of karma should not have the affliction of bodily suffering as an antidote, because the asceticism that eliminates your karma is considered a virtue other than suffering. If asceticism itself is an affliction or suffering, then asceticism is the result of bad karma, because it is itself a painful feeling. If this is admitted, then all karmic forces mixed together cannot become the path to liberation that eliminates karma, because you admit this. If craving is the cause of karma, then the path is the elimination of craving, so it must be admitted as the antidote to karma, which is self-contradictory. Any wisdom that directly sees selflessness can prevent future arising attachments and other afflictions from arising in one's own mindstream, because it destroys the fault of generating desire, destroying the cause of future attachments and so on—craving. Then, how can the karma that has already been created cause the actual suffering experienced in the present to disappear? This is impossible, because it can only prevent future karma generated by craving. If because of karma, even without craving, afflictions will arise, so one cannot be liberated, then, a person who has abandoned attachment will not arise from his own karma, because he has no craving. This is a universal rule: if one has craving, one will create bad karma; conversely, if one does not have craving, one will not create bad karma. If happiness arises from good karma, and craving arises from happiness; suffering arises from bad karma, and hatred arises from suffering, therefore karma also generates afflictions, then, a person who has abandoned self, even from happiness, will not generate craving in his own mindstream, because he has no inverted discriminations. Therefore, it can be proven that the Tathagata has been accomplished. Secondly, from here it can be proven that the Tathagata has been accomplished. The Bhagavan (possessing six kinds of excellent qualities) is the Tathagata, because you are the ultimate protector who teaches the Four Noble Truths. Furthermore, the Tathagata has been accomplished, because he is the ultimate being who knows reality, firmly knows reality, and completely knows reality, that is, possessing three kinds of special wisdom. This is a universal rule: perfect realization, that is, these three kinds of special wisdom, is the Tathagata.
