saying that it would be of great benefit to sentient beings. I said that I, a hermit, probably couldn't build such a large statue. The goddess said, 'Can't you even find a little clay?' Well, then I will make the statue, and you must not kill any living beings.' After a few days, once when a friend from the neighborhood brought back some clay, there was an Acara at the door carrying tools. After talking to him, he said that he was very good at clay sculpture, and thinking that this was a good omen, he invited him in. For two or three days, he collected all kinds of materials, even the paints were ready, and he began to sculpt the statue. After preparing everything at night, the next morning, the entire statue was completed, including the paints. He said that it was time for the consecration. Knowing that he was an incarnation of the Protector (Tibetan: མགོན་པོ།), I said, 'Please do the consecration yourself.' The Acara also dissolved into the statue. Thus, it is known as the Self-Arisen Protector, and it is very blessed. Even now, it is still very powerful and manifests signs. Although the blessings of other Protectors are secret, this Protector makes all beings who see, hear, remember, and touch him escape from samsara. This is the activity of the Holy Avalokiteśvara (Tibetan: སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས།). Therefore, until now, everyone has regarded him as an object of worship. The one who holds the secret treasury of the body, speech, and mind of the Buddha of Nyanston (Tibetan: གཉན་སྟོན།) is Gongon Sangye Tonpa, the Protector of Beings. Like the previous lamas, he is very knowledgeable in all subjects and is the best among the wise and virtuous. He is tired of the eight worldly concerns (Tibetan: འཇིག་རྟེན་ཆོས་བརྒྱད།) and sees samsara and nirvana as illusions. His realization of the true nature is unwavering, and his compassion is as vast as the sky. He can see countless yidam deities, and all the dakinis and dharma protectors obey him like servants. His altruistic activities arise naturally and are effortlessly accomplished. Such a noble lama gathered tens of thousands of sanghas. His disciples spread from Jālandhara (Sanskrit: Jālandhara) in the west and Uḍḍiyāna (Sanskrit: Uḍḍiyāna) to China in the east. The main disciple was the abbot Ai Sengge (Tibetan: ཨའི་སེངྒེ་), who propagated the Dharma in all directions.

Those who uphold the tradition of the glorious Shangpa Kagyu, established by Kyongwa Jagpa Tsang, diligently practice the Dharma cycles of this Protector without error. For those who expound, listen to, and practice the instructions of the Wisdom Dakini Niguma, this Protector spontaneously protects them, even without practice. Thus, the tradition passed down from Nyenton is called the Ri-gongpa tradition of the Protector, or the Lower Tradition. This lineage from Ri-gong Monastery became very prosperous in Central Tibet, including Phagmo Drupa and others. Jagpa has three branches: the Upper, Lower, and Middle Traditions. The Sangdenpa tradition has two branches, the Upper and Lower Lho-tsang, and so on. Those who uphold the tradition of the Upper Tradition of the Protector mainly focus on the three aspects of the Protector: approach, practice, and activity. Although many powerful individuals have emerged, there have also been many who, boasting of their great power, engage in intimidation. In the past, this tradition was very prosperous, but now only the Dharma lineage remains unbroken. The great beings of the Lower Tradition, the Shangpa Kagyu, properly rely on Dharma protectors. Because the profound meaning of the tantras is liberated, appearances are seen as illusory, and even the slightest movement of the spontaneously arising Mahamudra is not just lip service but is realized in the mind. There is no custom of reciting "Khuk shog, gyob shog, sod shog" or spending time with the intention of harming others. The knots of the mind are self-liberated, and in a state of bliss, the four activities are effortlessly accomplished. This is how it appears. The Ri-gongpa tradition of the Protector later became very prosperous. As for those who spread it to other Dharma traditions, even the great Je Tsongkhapa listened to Jagchen Jampa Pal. At the feet of Rigpai Wangchuk Gelek Pal, he inquired from Monam Kha Nyingpo, a disciple of Jagpa. Relying on them, the worshipers of this Protector spread in all directions. From the teachings transmitted from Ri-gong Monastery, the wise and accomplished Chosang Nyima emerged. From him, Arya Chen Sonam Dar and Arya Rimpoche and others inquired, and the Arya Four Divisions flourished. There are too many scattered propagations to count. Fourth, although there are many categories of Dharma cycles of this Protector, there are two: the wrathful practice of subjugation and the peaceful practice of wealth.
