If it is thought that the ground is self-nature, and it is also considered good, and it is also considered true, therefore it is with an object of focus, then, although self-nature is good and exists truly, there is no fault because one does not cling to it as being only that. For example, the virtues of conditioned things can also function in the conventional sense, but one does not cling to being able to function in the conventional sense. The dedication that concludes the two roots of virtue into one is: it is also permissible to use the three words "unified, fused, and combined" as synonyms, and it can also be explained as "unified" meaning gathered, "fused" meaning mixed, and "combined" meaning inseparable. In one commentary, it says that dedicating the perfections of this life and gods and humans, as well as various lesser vehicles, in sequence is spoken of as a skillful means. Therefore, all the roots of virtue are combined into one with the mind, and it is wished that the supreme fruit be obtained thereby. Then, to what supreme fruit should one dedicate? "Unsurpassed" and "unequaled" are synonymous terms, referring to the state where there is no higher attainment than that. The so-called "guru of gurus," the guru here refers to the enlightenment of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, and the guru that is superior to that is the unsurpassed enlightenment. If it is recited as "supreme of the supreme," then these two words are merely spoken from the perspective of synonyms and have no other meaning. Therefore, from the sutra itself and many examples, it seems better to speak of only one of them. In this way, through the power of accumulating roots of virtue, may such an attainment be obtained. The third is, such as the Buddhas of the past, etc., although we ordinary beings have made many vast aspirations that we consider to be for the sake of enlightenment and the benefit of others, it is actually difficult to become vast, so it is said that all the aspirations of the Buddhas of the three times, past, present, and future, may be accomplished through these roots of virtue of mine, and thus it becomes a dedication that enters the boundless ocean of aspirations. The second of the condensed meanings of the root text, explaining with a concise confession, is both a summary of the previous meaning and also a supplement to the rejoicing, supplication, etc., that were not previously shown. Refuge is previously brief
