Feeling deeply saddened, because the monks saw the face of the teacher. People thought, when the Buddha was alive, we were negligent and did not achieve outstanding accomplishments, so they became disillusioned and wholeheartedly devoted themselves to Dharma practice. Similarly, the noble disciples were also like that. The newly ordained monks who had not seen the face of the teacher thought that since we had not seen the face of the teacher, there were few who directly admonished us, and if we did not diligently practice the teachings, we would wander around, so they were very diligent in the direction of virtue. Therefore, the number of people who attained the four fruits increased day by day. From time to time, the noble Ananda imparted the oral instructions to the fourfold assembly. The holders of the Tripitaka taught the Dharma, and all the ordained lived with diligence. The teacher entrusted the teachings to Mahakashyapa, who in turn entrusted the teachings to the noble Ananda, which was also meaningful. All the lay people, including the king, also felt disillusioned because they had not seen the kings whose power of merit was immeasurable, thinking that in the past they could still see the excellent teacher of the fields, but now they could only see his disciples and the sangha of his disciples' disciples, so they developed a sense of rarity towards the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and constantly offered with reverence and diligently practiced virtue, without strife or anything like that. In this way, the world remained in virtue for about forty years. It is said that after the noble Ananda had protected the teachings for about fifteen years, a boy named Golden Color attained the Arhatship, and his biography is clearly recorded in the "Biography of Golden Color." At that time, if even a happy person like Golden Color could be effortlessly placed in the position of an Arhat, then King Ajatasatru thought that the noble Ananda was a Shravaka who was no different from the Buddha, so he made offerings to the noble Ananda and other five thousand Arhats for five years. At that time, from the city of Kimmili in the south, came a Brahmin named Bharadvaja, who was of the same lineage as the Harmful One, and was proficient in the mantras of illusion.

A very wise person came to Magadha. He competed in miracles with the monks. In front of the king and all the beings gathered, he conjured four mountains of gold, silver, crystal, and lapis lazuli. Each of them had four jewel gardens. Each garden had four lotus ponds. When he conjured them full of various birds, the noble Ananda conjured many fierce and unbearable elephants, which devoured the lotuses, stirred up the ponds, sent out strong winds to break the trees, and rained down vajra, completely destroying the walls and mountains. Then, the noble Ananda showed about five hundred forms of his body. Some emitted light, some rained, some performed the four conducts in the sky, some burned fire from above and gushed water from below, and so on, showing many twin miracles and then withdrawing them. Bharadvaja, the harmful one, and the group of beings such as Bone-one, developed great faith, and he taught them much Dharma. Within seven days, he placed five hundred Brahmins, including Bharadvaja, and another eighty thousand beings in the truth. Then, at another time, when the noble Ananda was staying in the Jeta Grove, the householder Shana-clad made a great festival offering to the Sangha for five years. Finally, by the order of the noble one, he became a monk. Gradually, he became a holder of the three baskets and was completely liberated from both parts of an Arhat. Thus, gradually, he placed about ten thousand monks in the state of Arhat. In order for both the Licchavis of the vast Vaishali and King Ajatashatru of Magadha to obtain a share of the relics, he stayed in the middle of the Ganges River between the two countries. Five hundred sages requested full ordination, so he conjured an island in the middle of the water. The monks also gathered there, and through miracles, within one hour, the five hundred were successively fully ordained and placed in the state of Arhat, so they were called the Five Hundred at Noon and the Five Hundred in the Water. Their leaders were called the Great One at Noon and the Great One in the Water. Then he passed away there, and his body was cremated in a self-generated fire.
