Chapter Four: The Culmination of Activities for the Benefit of Sentient Beings Thereafter, Guru Padmasambhava himself traveled to all the regions of India, intending to turn the wheel of the sacred Dharma. He thought, 'I shall teach the true Dharma to all.' Everyone said, 'Who is your lama?' He said, 'I am the self-born teacher, the Buddha. Even without a lama, I know the true Dharma.' People said, 'Except for Shakyamuni, there is no self-born teacher; this must be a demon.' They did not listen to his teachings. The Guru thought, 'Even if one possesses the true Dharma, without a lama, one cannot benefit beings.' Therefore, he thought to rely on many qualified lamas. Thus, he relied on Manjushrimitra, Shri Singha, Vimalamitra, and many other Indian pandits and siddhas. Because they were both learned and had attained accomplishment, he relied on one hundred and eight of them. He studied the teachings of Sutra, Tantra, Inner Tantra, and Secret Tantra. Especially the Secret Mantra Dzogchen, and the practices of prana, tummo, and taking the path of bliss and emptiness. He knew the five sciences without any confusion, and understood all the teachings by being shown just a little. Being both learned and accomplished, he traveled to Zahor. The king of that land, named Tsuklak Dzin, had many consorts, ministers, and great wealth. The king had no sons, but only one daughter. Her name was Mandarava, possessing all the qualities, like a daughter of the gods. She was unlike others, exceedingly beautiful in form. Kings from India, China, Khotan, Kashmir, Zhangzhung, Oddiyana, Nepal, Tajik, Gesar, and others Many kings made offers of friendship to obtain her. But she did not associate with anyone, unsoiled by the faults of samsara. Practicing the Dharma, she resided in a separate palace. The Guru saw her as an object of taming for the secret of bliss and emptiness. For her, he turned the wheel of wisdom of the four joys of great bliss. While she resided in perfect bliss and happiness, A wandering shepherd came there, And told the story of Mandarava and her attendants. The talk spread in the house, and everyone heard it. When it was reported to the king, he became furious. 'Inflict the punishment of fire on that ascetic! Imprison the daughter and her servants in a dark room!' 'If this news is leaked, and the secret is not kept, all the surrounding kingdoms will rise up as enemies.' 'Do not allow anyone to see, give the judgment in this way!' The ministers deliberated and sent twenty chief officials. The Guru did not display any miraculous powers, but was captured by the messengers in an ordinary manner. They heated thorny wood with sesame oil, And tightly bound the Guru's body and burned it. Thereafter, they each returned to their own country. Mandarava and her attendants were imprisoned in a dark room. They were whipped with thorny whips, causing great suffering. After seven days, the king said: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
