Without effort. Even the sky does not think, 'I should release rain that brings about the desired qualities for these beings.' It does not contemplate, does not discriminate, does not make effort. The karmic imprints of each being also do not think, 'We should release rain that matches our respective karmic shares.' It does not contemplate, does not discriminate, does not make effort. Yet, due to the power of the assembly of causes and conditions, in those places, from the gathering of clouds to the falling of rain, each occurs separately, in accordance with their respective karmic shares. For example, in the realm of the king of gods, clouds gather like a golden essence, and similarly, lightning and thunder also occur differently, and rain also falls with different natures. Likewise, in the middle of Jambudvipa (the continent of the rose-apple tree), the clouds are like red pearls, or like stacked black mountains; the lightning is like refined gold, or like the radiant light of an Indra-nila jewel; the thunder is like the sound of a Kalavinka bird, or like the sound of musical instruments, or even like the sound of the ocean churning; the rain is like rain of various jewels, or rain of weapons, or rain of clear water. Just as these appear differently in accordance with their respective karmic shares, the nature of the Three Jewels appears differently to different beings to be tamed, like this: To the most supreme beings, it appears as the Sambhogakaya (Enjoyment Body), the Buddha with great enjoyment, blazing with marks and signs, and the uncommon Dharma of the Mahayana (Great Vehicle), and the Sangha (community) dwelling on the great earth. Similarly, to the Shravakas (Hearers), Pratyekabuddhas (Solitary Realizers), and others whose merit is in accordance, it appears as the Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body) of the supreme Buddha, with the twelve deeds such as descending from Tushita heaven, and the Dharma of various vehicles, and the Sangha of noble ones and ordinary beings, and the fourfold retinue with the appearance of mendicants. To ordinary beings and those who have fallen into the lower realms, and others with slightly less merit, in accordance with their respective appearances, there are different teachers such as gods, humans, nagas, and animals, and impermanence, emptiness, selflessness, suffering, worldly sciences, songs, laughter, and so on, in which they have great faith, and the corresponding Dharma, and the Sangha that serves as the field of merit for each of them, also appear differently.

Manifestation. Similarly, in the Sutra on the Inconceivable Realm of Qualities and Wisdom of the Blessed Tathagata, it is taught: 'Manjushri, for example, in the middle of the waxing moon, at midnight, all sentient beings in Jambudvipa know that there is a circle of the moon in front of each of them. However, the circle of the moon does not think: I must somehow make these sentient beings know that I am the circle of the moon, I must appear in front of these sentient beings.' Although it does not think, Manjushri, the circle of the moon possesses the nature of non-mixture, and such activities of spontaneous accomplishment and non-thinking occur. Manjushri, similarly, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, in the midst of immeasurable, countless, unequaled, and unmeasurable retinues, although the Tathagata is seen to abide therein, the Tathagata does not think: I shall abide before them. Although it does not think, the Tathagata abides before them and teaches the Dharma as seen by sentient beings. Manjushri, similarly, if one is to be tamed by the color of gold,' up to 'if one is to be tamed by the color of lapis lazuli, Indranila, coral, and red pearl, the Tathagata appears in that color. Similarly, if one is to be tamed by appearing in the form of world guardians, Indra, Brahma, hell beings, pretas, and animals, it will also appear in that way.' Second, explaining the various categories separately, there are three categories. First, the commonly known Theravada Three Jewels: the Buddha Jewel is the supreme emanation body, with the appearance of a renunciate, abiding in the form of a great being, blazing with marks and signs, like Shakyamuni Buddha. The Dharma Jewel also appears in various vehicles due to the different faculties of beings and the antidotes, such as the eighty-four thousand Dharma doors. The Sangha Jewel is the four pairs and eight individuals, such as the venerable Shariputra. Therefore, ordinary people, monks, and other renunciates are referred to as the Sangha, but not as the Sangha Jewel, because they are not noble learners. Second, according to the uncommon view of the Mahayana, the Buddha Jewel is the Dharmakaya, and the Sambhogakaya residing in Akanishta. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
