Reflecting on deceased and departed friends, one should strive to benefit those who are dying and will die. Furthermore, even now, you have passed through many moments and are close to death. All sentient beings, not understanding this impermanence, vainly hope for permanence, engage in many meaningless activities, and ultimately lose everything, falling into the lower realms and suffering. Therefore, recognizing this, one should cultivate renunciation. When aversion to samsara arises and a firm view of impermanence is born in the mind, that is the measure of stability. Secondly, contemplate temporary happiness and lasting happiness to train the mind of enlightenment: Alas! Beings in the lower realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals have no happiness at all. Even the temporary happiness of gods and humans, which arises from giving and moral conduct, is impermanent and will turn into a source of sorrow. As stated in all the sutras and tantras, this will become manifest. Whatever joy and happiness anyone has experienced will change. Other pleasures are impermanent, youth is impermanent, power is impermanent, food, clothing, and wealth all change, and one must be certain of this. One must obtain ultimate and lasting happiness from all these impermanent things. This requires practicing the definitive meaning of the Buddhas—shamatha and vipassana (止观双运), and cultivating compassion for all deluded beings. Through such practice, there is a need to generate aversion to suffering, and seeing conditioned phenomena as the source of suffering is the measure. Thirdly, contemplate from various causes and conditions to train the mind of enlightenment: Now, all sentient beings want happiness, but the causes of happiness are few, and the causes of suffering are many. The causes of death are many, and the causes of life are few. In short, in this samsara, the three doors of body, speech, and mind are constantly engaged in various actions, but if one does not encounter the correct path and practice it, then due to the causes of delusion, these beings will have no opportunity to escape from samsara. I myself was deluded in the past, and other beings are also pitiable! Through such training, faith precedes, and there is a need to generate aversion to samsara. Generating compassion for the six types of beings and striving to make offerings to the Three Jewels is the measure of stability. Fourthly, contemplate that all actions are meaningless, thereby training the mind of enlightenment: Now, one's own body, speech, and mind are seeking happiness and enjoyment for oneself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wealth is complete, surpassing others. To avoid these situations from happening, one disregards non-virtuous actions, engaging in various activities such as commerce, agriculture, hired labor, and savings. Even without knowing whether one will die tomorrow, one still excessively pursues the enjoyment of life in terms of food, clothing, and so on, which is a mistake. Doing so is meaningless; even if one accumulates sinful and painful enjoyments, one cannot avoid losing all relatives and loved ones, and even one's own body must be abandoned, ultimately falling into the lower realms. One should seriously consider: 'What is the point of doing this?' One must think in this way. Therefore, there is a need to enter the oral instructions of the Guru, and to generate the thought that one must obtain the Guru's pith instructions at all costs. This is the standard of practice. Fifth, cultivate Bodhicitta by contemplating the qualities of the Buddha: Separated from all suffering, attaining all virtues, accomplishing all benefits for oneself and others, realizing the Bhumis, Paths, and Paramitas. Such a Buddha, if not attained in this lifetime through this human body, is extremely difficult to achieve. Therefore, from now on, one should diligently seek the means to attain unsurpassed Bodhi. Think in this way. Therefore, there is a need to be able to endure the suffering of practice, and to generate the thought that if one does not practice well, one will not be able to attain Buddhahood, thereby not abandoning diligence. This is the standard of accomplishment in practice. Sixth, cultivate Bodhicitta by contemplating the Guru's instructions: Beginningless obscurations can be purified through time and months, the qualities of the Buddha can be increased through time and months, and encountering the Guru's instructions, which all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have realized, what is the point of other things? One should diligently practice. Think in this way. Therefore, there is a need not to be immersed in other things, and to generate the thought that what is the point of worldly pleasures? Even practicing for a short while can become a supporting condition for generating non-conceptualization. This is the standard of accomplishment in practice. Seventh, cultivate Bodhicitta by contemplating non-conceptualization: In order to attain unsurpassed Bodhi, one should seize the wavering of conceptual thoughts and study non-conceptualization. After doing so, seize the thoughts, and for the state of mind not resting for even a moment, one should cultivate compassion. Therefore, there is a need for Bodhicitta to increase more and more, and to generate the thought of abiding in this for a long time and becoming constantly accustomed to it. This is the standard of stability. Therefore, these seven mind training practices are very important and are the foundation of practice. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
