Now, concerning the empowerment of the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha with the Sixteen Arhats that you are about to receive, let me first briefly introduce the history. As the master Nagarjuna said in 'Praise to the Eight Stupas': 'First, generate the supreme Bodhicitta, accumulate merit for countless kalpas, and in the middle, conquer the four maras. I prostrate to the Blessed Lion.' As it is said, first, he generated the supreme Bodhicitta. As stated in the Bhadrakalpika Sutra: 'When I was a doctor in the past, I offered a small amount of medicine to the Tathagata Shakyamuni, and I first generated the Bodhicitta.' Second, the way of accumulating merit is: 'From Shakyamuni Buddha to the guide Dhrtarastra, I have offered to the complete seventy-five thousand Buddhas. From the Buddha Suvrata onwards, to the Buddha Dhvaja-Indra, I have offered to the complete seventy-six thousand Buddhas. From the Buddha Dipamkara onwards, to the Buddha Kasyapa, I have offered to the complete seventy-seven thousand Buddhas.' As the Ratnavali says: 'Those moved by compassion, their going forth, birth, and play, leaving home, practicing austerities, and conquering the hosts of Mara for enlightenment, turning the wheel of Dharma, and the descent of the gods, and likewise, showing passing into Nirvana, are the deeds of the Buddhas.' In general, the deeds of the Buddha are inconceivable, but in short, there are a hundred deeds, and even shorter, there are twelve deeds, which are clear to everyone. Then, after turning the wheel of Dharma three times, the Buddha said, 'I will enter Nirvana.' The listeners, unable to bear seeing the Teacher enter Nirvana, rose into the sky by means of their miraculous powers, and from their hearts, flames of wisdom arose, burning their bodies, and a rain of relics fell. The Dharma robes and begging bowls fell to the ground. Because of this, most of the Shravakas had passed into Nirvana, causing the Buddha's Shravakas to decrease. Then, the Buddha gathered the Shravakas and said, 'Your passing into Nirvana because you cannot bear to see me pass into Nirvana is neither a kindness to me nor a contribution to the teachings.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
