Regarding the primary materials needed for empowerments and other rituals, the Tantras of Action mention fifteen, and although there are many ways to differentiate and categorize them, the twenty-five that are generally applied to Yoga Tantras are the most well-known. As stated in the 'Secret Essence Tantra': 'Five grains, five incenses, five precious substances, five essences, five medicines, and five nectars, be sure to dry them thoroughly.' Regarding the identification of these materials, the views of Indian and Tibetan scholars and accomplished masters differ, but in Tibet, to facilitate access for the general public, following a pure tradition, the five grains are: rice, barley, wheat, white sesame, and white peas. If white peas are not available, any kind of pea can be used as a substitute. The five incenses or five aromatics are: camphor, cardamom, nutmeg, saffron, and sandalwood (white or red). Some list them as: musk, saffron, nutmeg, sandalwood (white or red), and some use agarwood instead of musk, but in general, the former is more suitable. The superior five precious substances are generally difficult to obtain, so the inferior ones, gold, silver, copper, iron, and lead, can be used as substitutes. However, here we take the middle ground, namely: gold, silver, coral, amber, and pearl. There is also a saying that ruby can be used instead of silver, but it is difficult to gather them all. The five essences are: honey, molasses, butter, salt, and sugar. Here, it is better to use sesame instead of sugar, because they respectively represent the essence or sap of flowers, trees, herbs, water, and earth. The five medicines are usually: Solanum xanthocarpum, Kantakari, Acorus calamus, Curcuma longa, and cuttlefish bone. In one pure tradition, they are: fragrant apple blossom, blue lotus, Acorus calamus, Kantakari, and camphor. Kunchen Dharmakara, according to the tradition of Indian and Nepalese Vajra masters, gave an unmistakable method of identification: the five grains, five incenses, and five essences are the same as before. If Kashmiri saffron is not available, use Nepalese saffron or borneol instead. Since the superior and intermediate five precious substances are also difficult to find, as stated by the great accomplished master Padmavajra, any five of the following that can be found are sufficient: shells, conch, coral, silver, and pearl. If the superior five shells are not available, use a small amount of ruby as a substitute, and if there are not enough pearls, use fish eyes instead. The five medicines are: if you really cannot find the real Bṛhatī (藏文:བྲྀཏ་ཏཱི་) and Kantakari (藏文:ཀཎྜ་ཀཱ་རི་), then use two kinds of Tibetan woody medicinal materials as substitutes, the smaller one to replace Bṛhatī, and the larger one to replace Solanum xanthocarpum. Others include: white auspicious grass, fragrant blue herbaceous plants, small Rehmannia glutinosa, etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If both cannot be obtained because they grow in Nepal etc., there is no choice but to substitute with white 'shu dag' and 'cho ga kland sman' as per the practice of the predecessors. The white and red lotus of the 'Daṇḍotpala' (Sanskrit, Daṇḍotpala, Daṇḍotpala, stalk lotus) cane are shrubs that grow in Nepal etc., about the length of an arrow, with white and red flowers resembling aquatic plants. If not found, it is said that they can be replaced with 'zur lugs utpal' and 'shel dar sge'u dar'. It is said that these require roots. If these can be obtained, then the jewels will not be damaged, and the medicines etc. should be carefully poured into the vase. According to the tradition of the old yogis, some people hang jewels on the decoration of the vase, which is only a symbol. Although there is also the practice of making pills, it is better to use powder. On top of this, from the Unsurpassed Tantra, adding the five meats and five amritas, it is said that adding these two sets of five great samaya substances makes thirty-five vase substances. This is an indispensable feature in Anuttarayoga. If you can find treasures etc. from reliable sources, that would be great. If you really can't find them, mix the medicines of 'skyobs'. It is said that the vase should be filled two-thirds with perfume water. In the Vajra Heart Ornament it says: 'Sandalwood and Indian incense, / Camphor, saffron also, / Agarwood and divine wood, / And red sandalwood.' The divine wood mentioned here is juniper. If all of these cannot be obtained, mix any one and clean water. At the time of empowerment, in order to invoke the wisdom being, according to the tantras and oral instructions, there will be various combinations of substances, some elaborate and some simple. But what is generally applicable to the Unsurpassed Secret Mantra is that in the Vajra Dakini Tantra it says: 'Cloth wiped with menstrual blood, / Together with cat feces, / Grind finely and burn. / Through this burning, the practitioner, / Will be deeply blessed.' From the new and old tantras, sadhanas, and empowerment rituals, various substances of different quantities and types will appear. But according to the early pure practice, the white bodhicitta of a clean male, the red bodhicitta of a noble woman, the feces and urine of a capable yogi and a qualified monk, or any clean young male, the brain marrow of a person who did not die from a malignant infectious disease, this is the essence of great meat, that is, the fundamental substance of the five amritas. Also, the feces of a black cat, the meat of the four limbs of a sheep, cloth contaminated with dust from a woman's genitals, and some hair and nails of the practitioner. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
