The listener should respectfully abide in the samaya (vows), ensuring that even the smallest details, like grass and trees, are complete and without deficiency. In short, once you have entered into practice, until you emerge from retreat, you should not seek anything from the outside, but rather prepare everything in advance; this is crucial. If, during the course of practice, you need to search for something from the outside, then demons and obstacles will enter in the interim, causing the practice to decline, and many other faults will occur. Therefore, it is very important to understand this point. In particular, the implements for practice include: substances for practice, substances for support, and substances for accomplishment. First: The substance for practice of the Lama Dharmakaya (Buddha's Body of Truth) is a flawless, multi-faceted, transparent crystal with openings; the substance for practice of the Sambhogakaya (Buddha's Body of Enjoyment) is a mirror without cracks or blemishes, of moderate height; if you cannot find one, it should be no smaller than four fingers wide; the substance for practice of the Nirmanakaya (Buddha's Body of Emanation): the best is a thangka (painted or embroidered Buddhist banner) complete with the deities of the nine mandalas, the intermediate is the nine principal deities, and at the very least, there should be images of the Lama, Hayagriva (Horse-Headed Wrathful Deity), and Vajravarahi (Diamond Sow) drawn on silk, cloth, or paper, whichever is available, i.e., tsakli (small painted cards); the substance for practice of the peaceful Yidam (personal deity) is five-colored silk; the substance for practice of the wrathful deity is a skull cup with auspicious markings; the substance for practice of the semi-wrathful and semi-peaceful deity is a flawless vase of appropriate size; the outer substance for practice of the Dakini (female embodiment of enlightened energy) is a copper gau (amulet box), no smaller than the span of a hand, the size adjusted according to circumstances; the inner substance for practice includes gold, silver, turquoise, conch shell, coral, and pearl; the secret substance for practice is red and white bodhicitta (seminal fluids); the substance for support: the life-wheels of the Three Roots (Guru, Yidam, and Dakini) as described in the drawing; the substances for accomplishment: nectar (Tibetan: བདུད་རྩི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: अमृत, Sanskrit Romanization: amṛta, Literal Meaning: immortality), red powder (Tibetan: སིནྡྷུ་ར, Sanskrit Devanagari: सिन्दूर, Sanskrit Romanization: sindūra, Literal Meaning: red powder), the red and white bodhicitta of the Lama and consort, the six excellent substances: camphor (Tibetan: ག་པུར, Sanskrit Devanagari: कर्पूर, Sanskrit Romanization: karpūra, Literal Meaning: camphor), white and red sandalwood (Tibetan: ཙནྡན་དཀར་དམར, Sanskrit Devanagari: चन्दन श्वेत रक्त, Sanskrit Romanization: candana śveta rakta, Literal Meaning: sandalwood white red), rue (Tibetan: རུ་རྟ, Sanskrit Devanagari: रुता, Sanskrit Romanization: rutā, Literal Meaning: rue), borneol (Tibetan: གི་ཝཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: गिवं, Sanskrit Romanization: givaṃ, Literal Meaning: borneol), golden arura (Tibetan: ཨ་རུ་ར་གསེར་མདོག, Sanskrit Devanagari: हरितकी स्वर्ण वर्ण, Sanskrit Romanization: haritakī svarṇa varṇa, Literal Meaning: arura golden), cardamom (Tibetan: དབང་པོ་ལག་པ, Sanskrit Devanagari: इलायची, Sanskrit Romanization: ilāycī, Literal Meaning: cardamom), honey, brown sugar, white cheese, red butter, liquor and butter made from three types of rice, five grains, various fruits, various foods, and so on. Furthermore, in order to gather and please the Lama, Yidam, and Dakini, one should also prepare: lotus bowls, silk canopies, headdresses, hand drums, skull bowls, curved knives, vajras (thunderbolts), bells, khatvangas (Tibetan: ཁ་ཊྭཱཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: खट्वाङ्ग, Sanskrit Romanization: khaṭvāṅga, Literal Meaning: khatvanga), stacked skull cups, damaru (small hand drum), human thighbone trumpets, large and small incense offerings, butter lamps, and so on. One should accumulate as many beautiful and pleasing offerings as possible. Having assembled these implements, there are three aspects to practicing: place, time, and method. The place should not be chosen at random; the best is a sacred site or charnel ground; the intermediate is a secluded and pleasant place that has not been frequented by people, is warm, and has strong blessings, or a place where past accomplished practitioners have practiced; in short, a place that is auspicious, pleasing, and conducive to the growth of practice; the least desirable is a place among ordinary people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
