If, on the path of practice, one dreams of fire, water, cliffs, etc., and thus experiences fear, which becomes an obstacle to practice, then one should trample over whatever is frightening, thinking, 'I am asleep.' My body of karmic fruition is in bed. This body is a body of dream imprints, and the appearances are also dream appearances. Because dreams are like unreal illusions, one thinks that one will not be burned by the fire in the dream, nor carried away by the water. Therefore, one tramples through great fires and great waters, strongly remembering that dreams are like illusions. Know that dreams are illusions of the mind, and that one's own mind is also emptiness. Having understood this, one merges whatever fearful appearances arise with one's own mind, indivisibly, and rests in equanimity. Third, as the scripture says: 'In pure and impure realms, practice and listen to the Dharma, observe the abodes. Thus, practice diligently day and night, and all wishes will be fulfilled.' In order to generate merit, practicing the liberation of illusion is to ascertain the perceived environment. That is, for impure realms, such as the abodes of gods and humans, etc., the happy realms, and the hells, etc., whatever one wishes to see, one sees. For pure realms, such as the Buddha Amitabha in Sukhavati, etc., and also wherever one's own guru resides, one goes to meet and listen to the Dharma. For wanting to see how the pure and impure realms and the abodes of beings are, one cultivates Guru Yoga, praying to ascertain the perceived environment. During the day, one focuses on the wish to see whatever realm, to listen to whatever Dharma, etc. Once one falls asleep at night, one is certain that anything is possible in the dream. Therefore, if whatever one wishes to see, whatever Dharma and prophecies one wishes to hear, appear effortlessly and naturally, that is of course best. Otherwise, during the day, one can emanate one's own body as oneself or as another, fly freely in the sky, arrive at any place one wishes to go, and see and hear. Having thought in this way, the same will also occur in dreams at night. These may initially be just rough impressions, then gradually become clearer, and eventually one will be able to know things as they are. Third, there are three types of single-pointed meditation: meditation on uniting with the pure illusory body, meditation on uniting with clear light, and meditation on uniting with the bardo. The first is: 'Thereafter, contemplate the deity's form, sleep with intense longing. When falling asleep, encountering fierce beasts, fire, water, and all fears, knowing them to be unreal illusions, merge the mind with the deity's illusory body.' Therefore, in dreams, visualize the deity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pray that all appearances arise as illusion. During the day, hold the intention of grasping dreams. If you know it's a dream in tonight's dream, it's useless. You should repeatedly generate the thought of transforming the deity's body into emptiness, detachment, and illusion, and then go to sleep. If, at night, due to the appearance of fear, you can effortlessly transform everything into the deity, that's fine. If not, then during the day, think: 'I have fallen asleep, this appearance is the appearance of a dream. Dreams are illusions of my own mind, so they can be transformed at will. Now I shall transform it into a deity.' After thinking like this, visualize the deity. On top of this, practice with the thought of illusion and dream, visualizing the deity as an image in a mirror, appearing but without self-nature, as emptiness, clarity, and detachment. Thus, relying on the fearful and terrifying dream appearances at night, in the mind, the deity's body naturally arises as emptiness, clarity, non-attachment, and illusion. Then, practice transforming the deity into various forms and multiplying them, so that all appearances will appear as the clear and empty deity, and continue to grow. Second, daytime is a dream, 'Emptiness is like the sky, abide in the illusory luminosity, that is empty and clear like the sky, from purity arises the deity, that can also be transformed and multiplied, etc., during the day, unscattered mindfulness, at night, forcibly combine the instructions.' Thus, pray to realize luminosity. Pray that the deity of union arises from luminosity. Pray like this. During the day, on top of the thought of illusion and dream, add the thought 'Tonight I shall enter the luminosity of sleep, and from this arise the deity,' generate intense mindfulness. Whether self-appearance appears as the deity, or appears as ordinary, it is fine. For the appearance and the mind that appears, observe slightly, and it is fine to hold it only as appearing like illusion. In that state, abide without attachment. The mind dissolves into luminosity, and naturally arises the wisdom of clear and empty non-conceptual space. Also in that state, like a fish jumping out of water, practice arising the deity of emptiness, clarity, and detachment. When going to sleep at night, focus the mind on the white, subtle, and blazing A-character (藏文:ཨ,梵文天城体:अ,梵文罗马拟音:a,汉语字面意思:无) in the heart, abide relaxed and unattached in the luminosity, the awareness is not dull, and practice without scattering. Thus, when falling asleep, between sleep and dream, do not generate conceptual thoughts, and visualize the A-character without scattering. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
