Salutations. During the time of King Ngangtsul, a highly skilled craftsman named Sri Gadadhari, born in the land of Maru, created paintings and sculptures similar to those made by yakshas. Adherents to his style were known as the "Western Old School." During the reign of King Devapala and the glorious Protector of Dharma, a highly skilled craftsman named Dhimana appeared in the land of Varendra. His son, named Vitpala, created various molded images, carvings, and paintings similar to those made by the craftsmen of the nagas. The artistic styles of the father and son were different. Because the son resided in Bangala, regardless of where their followers built or the birthplace of the craftsmen, the molded images were called "Eastern Deities." In painting, the followers of the father were known as the "Eastern Style," while the followers of the son mainly flourished in Magadha and were thus recognized as the "Central Style." The early craftsmanship of Nepal was similar to the Western Old School. The paintings and clay figures of the intermediate period were more inclined towards the Eastern style and appeared to be native to Nepal. Later, this was not certain. In Kashmir, they initially followed the Central and Western Old Schools. Later, someone named Hasuraja created a new style of both painting and sculpture, which is now called the "Kashmiri Style." Wherever the Buddha's teachings existed, the craftsmen flourished. Wherever heretics ruled, the craftsmen declined. Wherever tirthikas prevailed, unskilled craftsmen thrived. Therefore, the styles mentioned above are not very common nowadays. In Pukam and the southern regions, the construction of statues is still very popular, and those artistic styles do not seem to have appeared in Tibet before. In the south, there are many followers of Jaya (藏文:ཛ་ཡ་,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:Victory), Parojaya (藏文:པ་རོ་ཛ་ཡ་,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:Victory over others), and Vijaya (藏文:བི་ཛ་ཡ་,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:Complete Victory). This is the forty-fourth (chapter) on how the statue makers came to be. The Manifestation of How the Glorious Source, the Sacred Dharma, the Jewel, Flourished in the Holy Land, Called "The All-Accomplishing Wish-Fulfilling Gem." If one understands the structure of this narrative well, even some who are known as great Tibetan scholars will, after the seven transmissions of the Teacher, from Nagarjuna

etc. Occurring, thinking that King Chandraraja ascended the throne immediately after the death of King Ashoka, and that there were seven Chandras and seven Palas, fourteen kings in total, from Saraha to Abhayakaragupta, all the scholars were calculated in a complete manner, and the time interval was very short. Because of the fear that the order of the scholars would be inconsistent, their respective lifespans were lengthened. Although it seems that the time interval is very long, these errors will disappear without any basis. So, on what is this statement based? Although there are many Buddhist histories and scattered stories translated in Tibet, I have not seen any that are as complete and orderly as that. Nothing that can be believed is written here. Regarding the history before King Ramapala (616-651 AD), I saw a work written by the Magadhan Pandit Savang Sangpo, which was two thousand shlokas in length. I also heard about it from some Lama Pandits. Based on this, plus the Buddhapurana blessed by the royal Pandit Wangpo, which fully records the history before the fourth Sena king, with a length of one thousand two hundred shlokas. There is also the story of the lineage of scholars written by the Brahmin Pandit Bhataghata, which is about the same length as the former, and it was also supplemented from it. Except for minor details, most of the respective time arrangements are consistent with these three works. Moreover, these works seem to mainly record the spread of Buddhism in Jambudvipa. Regarding the situation in Kashmir, Uddiyana, Tokhar, the South, Koki, and the various islands, I have not been able to write because I have not seen or heard detailed records. For some scattered stories that appeared later, although there were no written records in the past, they were all transmitted orally and are trustworthy. The contents appearing in the Garland of Stories are also recorded. Thus, the rare jewel of stories, Is strung together with easy-to-understand words. To adorn the necks of the wise, This is woven into a harmonious and peaceful garland. Those who have contributed to the Buddha's teachings
