If not, what to do? The Brahmin said: Let yourself be put in pledge and borrow five karshapanas. After consultation, it was done that way. Borrowing new clothes and ornaments from a householder, he dressed the Brahmin's wife. He invited the Blessed One to his home and offered food. Then, when the wife put down the jewelry, it was stolen by a thief. The Brahmin thought: When will I ever get such jewelry? I think I have no other way than to go to the forest and die. 16-65 He went to a remote monastery and saw a man digging a hole. The Brahmin went there and found the previous jewelry and came home. The wife, also uneasy, did the housework, and from underground she found a golden vase filled with gold. Knowing that such a thing happened as a benefit of offering alms to the Buddha, she listened to the Dharma with devotion, and the Brahmin and his wife saw the truth. After that, the village girls Gamo and Gadama in that area also offered food to the Tathagata. The Teacher also preached the Dharma, and the two of them also saw the truth. At that time, sixty members of the Good Group also attained Arhatship, making a total of 121 Arhats. The Thirty-first, Taming the Thousand Braids. Thirty-first, Taming the Thousand Braids is like this: At that time, the Blessed One thought: In this Magadha country, the Shramanas and Brahmins each hold power, so who can subdue the few among the many people? He thought that the Flaming Light-Protected Hair Ascetic was such a person. Light-Protected lived to be one hundred and twenty years old, attained the Samadhi of the Peak of Existence, and people respected him as an Arhat, and he himself considered himself an Arhat. Light-Protected had five hundred hair-ascetic attendants, and his disciples were two brothers, namely Ganga Light-Protected and Gaya Light-Protected, each with two hundred and fifty hair-ascetic disciples. They were all practicing austerities on the banks of the Nairanjana River. Flaming Light-Protected lived at the head of the river, and the other two lived downstream. Then, the Blessed

When the Blessed One arrived at Kasyapa's dwelling place, Kasyapa also prepared a seat and welcomed him, saying, 'It is good that you have come!' 16-66 The Blessed One sat down on the prepared seat and spoke words of joy and satisfaction to Kasyapa. He said, 'If you have no discomfort, I will stay in this fire chamber for one night.' Kasyapa replied, 'I have no discomfort, but there is a fierce naga dwelling there, and I fear it may cause offense.' Then the Blessed One went to the fire chamber and sat down. At night, the naga, angered, emitted smoke. The Teacher, through his miraculous power, emitted even greater smoke. The naga then ignited a fire. The Blessed One entered the fire element samadhi, and the entire house was ablaze. Kasyapa, looking at the stars, saw this and thought, 'Alas, will the beautiful Gautama be reduced to ashes by the fierce naga?' Then, that naga was subdued and placed in a begging bowl until morning. The Teacher, carrying the bowl, came to Kasyapa's place. Kasyapa asked, 'What is that you are carrying in the bowl?' The Teacher said, 'This naga, whom no one without miraculous power can allow to dwell in their place, I have subdued and brought back.' He thought, 'This great ascetic is truly powerful and possesses great miraculous abilities!' Even so, he thought, 'I am also an arhat!' Therefore, he did not wish to follow the Blessed One. From then on, the Blessed One stayed in the dense forest near Kasyapa's dwelling. Kasyapa's five hundred Brahmin disciples, each tending three fire pits and practicing with fire, were unable to ignite the fire because it had been blessed. They could not ignite it by any means. They complained to Kasyapa, and Kasyapa reported it to the Teacher. The Teacher said, 'Kasyapa, do you wish to ignite the fire?' Kasyapa replied, 'Great ascetic, please ignite it!' Then the fire ignited on its own. Kasyapa thought, 'This great ascetic is truly powerful and possesses great miraculous abilities! I am also an arhat!' Then, after the five hundred Brahmins had finished using the fire, they wanted to extinguish it but could not. 16-67 Then, they spoke to Kasyapa. He reported it to the Teacher, 'Do you wish to extinguish the fire?' Kasyapa also replied that he did, and then the fire extinguished on its own.
