The Lama's words. Showing the distinctions of outer and inner. Now, distinguishing between outer and inner, etc., there are two types: generally, the distinction between outer and inner mantra, and specifically, the distinction between father tantra and mother tantra. The first has two aspects: the distinction of the path of maturation and the distinction of the path of liberation. Firstly, if one is content with only the empowerment of wisdom, that is an outer path. As it is said in the Glorious Secret of Wisdom: 'By the empowerment of the vase of water, one enters the Kriya Tantra. By the empowerment of the crown, one enters the Charya Tantra. By the giving of the vajra and bell, one realizes the Yoga Tantra.' If one receives the complete four empowerments, that is an inner path. As it is said in the Hevajra Tantra: 'The teacher, the secret, wisdom, and the fourth are also the same.' etc. The path of liberation has four distinctions: the distinction of the place of meditation, the distinction of the order of conduct, the distinction of the implements, and the distinction of the objects of enjoyment. Regarding the place, if one prefers to practice purely in a king's palace or on top of Mount Meru, etc., that is an outer mantra practice, as it is taught to reside in cleanliness. If one prefers to practice in the center of a charnel ground, Śrīdhana (Śrīdhana, Auspicious Place), or Oḍḍiyāna, etc., that is an inner path. As it is said in the Two Inquiries: 'Under a single tree or in a charnel ground, in the house of a mā (mā, Sanskrit, female spirit) or at night, or in a secluded borderland.' etc. The distinction of conduct is that if one mainly focuses on bathing and cleanliness, etc., that is an outer path. As it is said in the Outer Contemplation: 'Defilement and impurity, and the arising of suspicious thoughts, one should reside in cleanliness in a secluded place.' If one relies on the five meats and five amṛtas in a mixed manner, that is an inner path. As it is said in the Guhyasamāja: 'By using excrement, urine, semen, blood, etc., one will attain siddhi.' The distinction of implements is that if one strives for precious vessels, etc., that is an outer path; if one strives for kapāla (kapāla, Sanskrit, skull cup), etc., that is an inner path. As it is said in the Two Inquiries: 'In one part of a large skull of a man, fill it completely with fine wine, offer it to the lama, a great portion, and after prostrating, drink it yourself.' The distinction of substances is that if one mainly focuses on the five amṛtas, sugar, honey, milk, yogurt, and butter, that is an outer path; if one mainly focuses on the five meats and five amṛtas, that is an inner path. As it is said in the Two Inquiries: 'The five amṛtas and molasses wine, poison and nīm (nīm, Sanskrit, neem) are the substances of the son.' Thus, the Kriya, Charya, and Yoga Tantras possess the characteristics of the outer paths, while the Anuttarayoga possesses the characteristics of the inner path, and therefore it should be understood in this way. Now, Anuttarayoga is divided into three. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even without (a mother), for the time being, distinguish between the father lineage and the mother lineage. 1-89 This is further divided into two: the manifestations of past Buddhas and the differences in subsequent practices. The first is: to tame males, it is said that males are the main focus, so it is the father lineage; to tame females, it is said that females are the main focus, so it is the mother lineage. As it is said: 'To tame males, the Yoga Father Tantra is extensively taught; to tame nuns, the Yoga Mother Tantra is extensively taught.' For subsequent practices, when meditating on the generation stage, if the male deity is the main focus at the place of turning the wheel, it is the father lineage; if the female deity is the main focus, it is the mother lineage. This can be confirmed by experience. When meditating on the completion stage, in the yoga with signs, the father lineage focuses on the prana (Tibetan: རླུང, Sanskrit: vāyu, Romanization: vāyu, Meaning: wind); the mother lineage focuses on the bodhicitta (Tibetan: བྱང་སེམས, Sanskrit: bodhicitta, Romanization: bodhicitta, Meaning: mind of enlightenment) at the lower gate. As the 'Garland of Jewels Tantra' says: 'In glorious Guhyasamaja (Tibetan: གསང་བ་འདུས་པ, Sanskrit: Guhyasamāja, Romanization: Guhyasamāja, Meaning: Secret Assembly), the upper gate is joined with the prana; in the Wisdom Yoga Mother Tantra, sila-kapura is joined.' If the main focus is on the formless clear light, it is the father lineage. As the 'Five Stages' says: 'Like the face of the sky, supremely pure, the clear light is its object; having attained the state of clear light, one will be born into a form of one's own accord.' If the main focus is on the innate bliss-emptiness, it is the mother lineage. As the 'Two Examinations' says: 1-90 'The co-emergent that cannot be expressed by others, cannot be found anywhere; it is known through reliance on the master's skillful means and one's own merit.' Explanation of Examining the Tantras Examining the tantras has two aspects: the essence and the divisions. The first is: the method by which one knows and understands the characteristics of the tantras, which is to explain all that the Buddha has said. Whatever is expressed by speech and recorded in texts is called a tantra. How is this so? Because the nature of the tantra resides in one's own mind, and previously uncomprehending practitioners realize it through texts, it is called examining the tantras. For example, the story of Ramo Shara, or a medical book showing medicines. There are three divisions: root tantras, subsequent tantras, and explanatory tantras. The location is on the summit of Mount Meru, where the Guhyasamaja (Tibetan: གསང་བ་འདུས་པ, Sanskrit: Guhyasamāja, Romanization: Guhyasamāja, Meaning: Secret Assembly) was taught to subdue Indra and others. In other places of magical power, the Chakrasamvara (Tibetan: འཁོར་ལོ་སྡོམ་པ, Sanskrit: Chakrasamvara, Romanization: Chakrasamvara, Meaning: Wheel of Bliss) was taught in the Cool Grove Cemetery to subdue the son of the gods, Delightful Power. In the place where the Dharma arose in Jambudvipa, the Chakrasamvara Tantra was taught. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
